OT - has anyone dealt with compassionate flights

through Air Canada or West Jet recently?
A friend's Gpa passed yesterday and they need to fly to Idaho. What is the procedure for asking for discounted rates and how hard is it to get?

It depends on the airline....but when my Mom died I could not get any discount to get back to NS for my hubbyband kids.I was told that the regular rates were discounted enough....I hope she gets something from them.

I'm sorry to say, but those are long gone.
Couldn't get one when my Grandma died. No longer offered was told.

Sorry to disagree with other posters, but WestJet offers bereavement fares. (I am on my PlayBook so I don't know if the copy and paste worked for the link.) The number to call is 1-800-581-9499 (don't know if that is their regular reservation line or special number).

It does say to check if there is a sale fare already so I am guessing that the discount may not be significant.

(I am going to guess that AC has a matching program, but don't know for sure.)

However, regardless of discount, I think the closest city to fly into with WJ would be Calgary then long drive to Idaho? AC flies into Lethbridge so they might be a better choice by a couple of hours (if they offer a bereavement fare).

You have to pay for the fare up front and then produce a death certificate to get any refund that is applicable. We did this when DH's father died....it was not on AC or WJ though. We called several American carriers looking for a last minute seat for him and they all said that this was the process.

Call the airline directly. When dh's dad passed away in NS we arranged through air canada to get him, his 2 brothers and sil's there for the funeral at a better rate, they didn't get flight time choices but they didn't care.

you never know what can be offered if you don't ask them directly. Sorry for your loss.
