My wonderful dachshund Freddie had a freak accident yesterday. He ruptured a disc by jumping. We took him to the vet, who gave him steroid shots and medicine and told us to crate rest him. He was doing well until right before bed he moved in his kennel in a way that put him in severe pain. He started lashing around and when we took him out of his cage, he even bit my husband twice, which he NEVER does.
Luckily, my best girlfriend Samantha is also his vet. She came over and determined that he had a severe back injury and the ruptured disc had caused him to be paralized. I could work with the paralyzation as long as Fred wasn't in pain, but he was hurting so bad, it was awful.
Because Beuthanasia (the medicine that puts the dog down) is a controlled substance, Samantha couldn't just put him down right there, it has to be done at a vet. So we took him to the emergency vet and said goodbye to our baby.
I'm devastated. It all happened in one day and I just can't deal right now. I know, I know, he's a dog, but I loved that dog more than most people.
Anyway, thanks for letting me get some of this out. Love you guys.
