My wonderful dachshund Freddie had a freak accident yesterday. He ruptured a disc by jumping. We took him to the vet, who gave him steroid shots and medicine and told us to crate rest him. He was doing well until right before bed he moved in his kennel in a way that put him in severe pain. He started lashing around and when we took him out of his cage, he even bit my husband twice, which he NEVER does.
Luckily, my best girlfriend Samantha is also his vet. She came over and determined that he had a severe back injury and the ruptured disc had caused him to be paralized. I could work with the paralyzation as long as Fred wasn't in pain, but he was hurting so bad, it was awful.
Because Beuthanasia (the medicine that puts the dog down) is a controlled substance, Samantha couldn't just put him down right there, it has to be done at a vet. So we took him to the emergency vet and said goodbye to our baby.
I'm devastated. It all happened in one day and I just can't deal right now. I know, I know, he's a dog, but I loved that dog more than most people.
Anyway, thanks for letting me get some of this out. Love you guys.

((HUGS)) to you and your husband. Our fur babies mean alot to us and it is never easy to say goodbye much less to quickly. I hope time will ease your pain. I am glad your friend was there to help your with the decesion.

so sorry, i have a dog, pictured here, with back problems and know that it is a ticking time bomb for him. he spends half the year on prednisone and muscle relaxants

So sorry to hear that Michelle. To some of us pets are just like family and it's tough to deal with the loss. I always think of the fun life we had together and try not to focus on the moment they left us. Too painful. :sad1: You just know Freddie is having a ball right now in doggie heaven. He really is! :littleangel:

I'm so sorry. Lost a couple of pets recently - I know how you feel. :(

I am so sorry Michelle.

I know it's hard...but Freddie trusted you to do what was best for him and you have, as awful as it is.

I know that words dont really help. but know that we're thinking about you.

I'm so sorry to hear about Freddie. Having to make the decision to put a beloved pet/family member to sleep is painful and difficult. I had to make that decision a few years ago and it is can set off tears today. Even if it was the right thing to do, it hurts your heart. Don't be ashamed to grieve for Freddie. If anyone says "it's just a dog" then they are a complete idiot and in my book are inferior to us dog lovers. :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

I'm so sorry to hear about Freddie. That is so sad and must be so tough. Pets are family and are very special. Freddie would be so thankful you let him go to Doggie heaven and took away all his pain. Take care. :grouphug:

I'm so sorry about your dog. I understand what you mean when you say you love your dog more than most people. For a lot of us they are more than just pets. They are a huge part of the family. I'm so sorry for your loss. I've been there too.

I too am terribly sorry to hear about Freddie. I can not and do not want to imagine how bad this feels. :grouphug::flower3:

I'm so sorry about your baby, Freddie! :grouphug:

Dogs aren't pets - they're family members. Making that awful decision isn't really a choice we have...when it's time, you just know it, as difficult as it is. But, as someone else pointed out here, Freddie is having a BLAST right now, running around and playing, and he knows he'll see you again someday...

We had to have my baby, Rocky, put to sleep more than 11 years ago, and I still think about him just about every day. If I talk about him, I can still cry! It's no different than losing a 'human' member of your family...it just hurts. Period.

Hang in there...I'll be keeping you in my thoughts...:grouphug:

I am so so sorry to hear about poor little Freddie. :sad1:

My dogs and cats are and have been like my children - when one has passed away it has always been so hard - I cherish all my memories with each and every one of them :goodvibes

I've asked Corky to be on the look out for Freddie up in doggie heaven - she'll show him the ropes :littleangel:

I'm so sorry Michelle....that is such a difficult and heartbreaking decision......I've been there twice....and i know that even knowing that you're doing the right thing and putting your beloved friend out of terrible misery, doesn't lessen the hurt and heartbreak.....
but you had to do it ...you couldn't let Freddie suffer so horribly.......
and he needed you to be strong to do that for him.....not to let his suffering continue...

you're in my thoughts..

Never say, I know he's just a dog... he was your friend, companion, and there were probably times when he understood you better than anyone else. I am so very sorry for your loss and to have it happen so suddenly is truly heartbreaking. I will be thinking about you and hoping that in time, you can find another great canine friend.

OH, my gosh... :sad1:

No dog is "just a dog", Freddie was your furbaby, and I am SO sorry you had to lose him this way. My thoughts are with you, and many

I know this probably won't take away the pain you are feeling right now, but from one dachshund mom to another, I understand. Our dachshund, Nittany jumped off our bed, ruptured a disk and had to be put down at just 4 years old. In pain, he bit me too. Somethiing totally out of character for him. A year ago, we had to have two dachsunds (15 & 13) put to sleep within 3 days of each other. They are not just dogs, they are members of our family and always will be. Take comfort in knowing that Freddie is waiting for you in heaven and in the meantime he is enjoying all the dog treats he can eat! I hope he has met Nittany, Phoebe and Marci already. You did the right thing for your beloved pet. Until you meet again........

Can't imagine the sadness you are going through right now, I am so sorry for your loss. Peace to you and to Fred, I bet you were such a blessing to him while he was here.:grouphug:

Michelle,
I am so sorry for your loss, and am sending pixie dust your way. At least Freddie is not in pain anymore, and he is running free with all of his doggie friends in Heaven.
