OT ~ Green Acres is the place for me???????

Hi All ~ I have been living in a townhouse in Mississauga for over 20 years. While I have completely loved living here, recently I've been craving the country. DH, DD and DS would love to buy a small farm, but I'm holding back.

Has anyone had experience moving from the comfy burbs to farm life?

My in laws moved from London to Strathroy back when all the kids were in highschool and the kids all hated it. they thought it would be fun at first but after about 6 months they all longed for the city again and all the things the city offered. I got stuck living out there for 6 months and it was the LOOONNNGGGEEESSSTTT 6 months of my life I would drive out there after work shower change and then drive back to London just for something to do I can never see myself living out of the city again after that little experiance.

My DH was raised on a farm, but he knew when he married me that I will ALWAYS be within a 7 minute drive of a shopping mall. I just know that with my kids now at the age where they visit friends, I would go completely insane if I had to do the drive into the city several times a day just to drop off/pick up kids at friends houses.

But the thought of nice, peaceful quiet summer evenings sitting on the deck in the country does have an appeal ... it just won't be happening for my household.

Doesn't hurt to look ... have fun!

DH and I were born in Hamilton and lived there all of our lives until he retired 2 years ago and we decided that we were totally sick of city living and we sold the house and moved out to Simcoe Ont (near Lake Erie )We live in a brand new semi and tt was the best thing we've ever done.....we can walk down trails and country roads but we're only a 10 minute walk to downtown Simcoe and some really neat shops...our neighbours all along the street are the nicest people I've ever known.Life couldn't be any better than it is out here and I am blessed each and every day to be here! This Sunday will be our 2 year anniversary here.

PS My son and my brother both live in Mississauga and although I love to visit I'm still very glad to drive back home!

My story is exactly the opposite. Grew up in the Federal parks and moved to a small town and spent most of my youth on an acreage. Moved to the city to do post secondary and transferred to Calgary for work purposes. Even though my children have many wonderful opportunities living in Calgary I would move in a heartbeat. I absolutely hate living in the city. An acreage or even a small town with less than 10,000 instead of 1,000,000 like Calgary would be my cup of tea.

Ya if I ever move from London I want to move to a larger place Like Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver. Living in London is fine but the community is full of old money and is very very conservative I guess that is why London is the largest test market in Canada if something flies here it will fly anyplace.

Dh and I discussed just this when we made the decision to move - we did not end up in a 'country' home but backing onto a school - we had several reasons for staying within the city - I didn't want to become more of 'mom's taxi' then I already am - I don't mind driving 5 or 10 mins to drop off at karate or take kids to swimming but I would not appreciate having to do a much longer drive that it would be in order for us to find a decent piece of property we could afford - the other reason was simply that if dh insisted on moving to the country I would no longer be working - in order for me to keep my daycare open I need to be where the action is - near a school preferably - without my income there would be no trips or extra's and he wasn't willing to give all that up!!

I compromised and we built a house with a separate entrance for the daycare which has been built in the basement and I let him put a big screen tv over the fireplace instead of a nice picture - I'll even let him get that hot tub for the back yard as soon as we get grass!! He's happy for now and so am I - I get to keep doing what I love to do instead of being bored out of my gord sitting home and he doesn't have to look at my big colourful plastic toys b/c they are all in their own space!!

I grew up in rural Nova Scotia, and my husband is from St. John's. We have been in Ottawa for 9.5 yrs and while we hated coming here, we absolutely love city living now. He has recently retired from the military and taken a civilian job, and we intend for Ottawa to be our permanent home.

A couple of years ago I was nostalgic for home and we gave some thought to asking for a posting back to NS. We could have bought a beautiful home for what we could sell our townhouse for. My concern was that we were going to be uprooting our kids from the only home they really remember (our son was 4, and our daughter was 6, when we bought this house 6 yrs ago). The thought of leaving all of the amenities that we have right at our fingertips, and the easy commute to Toronto, Montreal and the US was making our decision that much more difficult.

Them my parents, my neice and her husband came to our house for Christmas, and we got over wanting to move back home! Sometimes it's good to 1500kms between you.

Now we will get our country living fix at the campground. We put our camper on a permanent site at our favourite campground so we are looking forward to being able to go out every weekend.

We went from a very nice subdivision in Wasaga Beach to an 80 acre parcel of property in "rural" northern Ontario.....a work move. We where there for 5 years with an only child and the nearsest town of 6000 people 45 minutes away. Our family was 6 hours away by car. It was a bit of a grind but there are times that I miss the privacy. We moved back to the beach and bought in a subdivision again but we have access to so many options, hiking trails, bike trails, the beach and the countryside 5 minutes outside of town, not to mention Collingwood 20 minutes away for skiing and Barrie 25 minutes away for great shopping. It's ideal for us. We have a horse and board her outside of the beach about 15 minutes away so I have farm access year around without the work involved. We have it good and it fits everyones needs.
