OT French Immersion Help....

Hi there....my DD11 has started a late french immersion program and I'm not much help to her when it comes to homework. Does anyone have any website suggestions that I might find useful in helping her with homework??

both of our kids are in french immersion, and neither my wife or I are very fluent. We use babelfish for translations, and fortunately, they have switched to the Nelson math book, which has an english version online.

Both my girls did early French Immersion. One of my concerns is that I would not be able to help them with their homework. When I discussed this with their teachers, they all thought this was a good thing. They recognize that it is a huge adjustment to the children and without parents helping, they get a better idea of how the child is doing.

My girls are now in Grade 7 and 9. I still can't help them with most of their homework. (you will learn to like this). They do fine without me.

In terms of websites I never found a specific one, but my girls learned very quickly that a google search on a French word returned French websites. That is how they do all their research. The teachers would help them with words on the websites they did not understand.

It will be an adjustment, but stick it out, and your daughter will do fine...

My wife helps the kids out with their work 3 of our kids are in french immersion and they all love it all we have to do is ask the teachers and they are more than happy to help with reference material etc. I would write a note to the teacher asking for reference material and any online resources they may suggest.

Just don't rely on the webistes for translating more than a word- they do a terrible job. (I am a late F.I. graduate and now I teach F.I.) It will get easier as they go along, but a trusty French-English dictionary is a wonderful tool to have.

I'd have to agree.
I've been in FI since grade 1 (I'm in grade 9 now) and using translators is a bad idea. They only translate word by word, so they don't get the meaning of the sentence. Words like 'broadcast' will not translate correctly.
Also, as kids get older, they may start writing entire compositions in english and translating it. It will show, the teachers will know, and they will probably die on the inside a little each time they see it.
