We are looking for some place to camp for the Easter holiday. I was thinking of Fort Whaley in Whaleyville, MD. Has anyone ever been there? It is part of Frontier Town. I haven't heard anything, but I have check out there website.
I would love to just go to the fort, but DH says it's just too far for a weekend trip.
Thanks for any info.
Lisa

I'd be interested in checking out Fort Whaley, too. We were supposed to go to FW for Easter, and I had to cancel the ressies:sad2: because the kids and I had so many snow days, we don't have enough of an Easter vacation left! We just made our June trip longer!:goodvibes

Easter is early this year..23rd of March..are they open year round?

We are also thinking about a trip there. It looks like a neat place. After our WDW trip I can't think anything will compare but, would like to hear some reviews from ya'll on it too!

We've been to Fort Whaley a few times and think it's decent. Especially for as close as it is to Ocean City. Frontiertown seems to have more to offer (we've stayed there too, but in the summer I've heard it can be quite the party crowd with teens & such - moreso than Ft. Whaley). Frontiertown offers entertainment (evening shows) and a waterpark (free admission when staying at either of these 2 campgrounds). Fort Whaley is about 15-20 minutes and Frontiertown is about 5 minutes to O.C. area.

I'd recommend them both.

We stayed there in November of 2001.

This is the "cousin" campground to Frontier Town Campground in Ocean City Maryland. Ft. Whaley is about 15 minutes west of Ocean City on US Route 50, which is the main road from points west leading to Ocean City.

As our reason for camping this weekend was to view the Leonid Meteor Shower, so a location outside the city was ideal.

Ft. Whaley is located along side US route 50, so road noise is noticeable at all times. Looking at the campground map, US 50 is at the top past the arcade building and the pool. We camped on site 29 in the "A Lane South" section. These sites have electric and water at each site. They are comfortable in size with generous tree coverage. The downside is that there is no under story (i.e. bushes) between sites to provide privacy from your neighbor.

Every site has a fire ring with a fold over cooking grate. We took a walk around the campground and al seemed in good condition. Sufficient street lighting is provided so that a late trip to the bath house would not need a flashlight from most sites.

The bath house was beautiful! Very clean and apparently having just been remodeled. While i am not a fan of "push button" showers, these were well adjusted and provided about 30 seconds of hot (not scalding) water for each push of the button.

As with most campground maps, the Ft. Whaley map is a little deceptive. Site 29 of A Lane South backs up to sites 11 & 12 on the "B Circle", not a grove of trees as the map appears to indicate. But they are not any closer than other campgrounds we have visited.

Parents of small children should note that there are 2 small ponds as well as drainage canals/ditches with water deep enough for small children to get into trouble in.

Taking everything into consideration, this is a very nice campground. While activities were shut down for the season when we were there, during the summer there should be lots for the family to do. Additionally, you can drive into Ocean City and take advantage of all the activities at Frontier Town Campground.

Marylander here.
PP is correct -there are 2 campgrounds (sort of sister campgrounds)
Fort Whaley and Frontiertown.
Fort Whaley is right off 50. This can be noisy. However tends to be a quieter campground than Frontiertown and it's party campers in the summer.
Frontiertown has more to do so to speak. Nice store, pool, waterpark etc...
Both campgrounds would be better enjoyed in the summer months due to the increased activities. But the beach is close by and the campgrounds offer a shuttle to and from Ocean City. There is also more primative camping on Assateague (sp?) It's beautiful, quiet and close to the beach as well.
Mosquitoes and /or flies can be bad at times at ANY of the campgrounds.
Good Luck and Do What's right for you.

p.s. we go to the beach several times a year here but have recently stopped doing so in season as the traffic is horrible!!!!!

We've stayed there several times when we couldn't get into Frontiertown. Its clean and a nice place to stay. Its very quiet and its not atoo far of a ride into Ocean City. Frontiertown is more conveinient for us but this campground is a good place to stay as well just not as fancy. JMHO
