Not sure if this is the right board but since it's about trying to earn/save money, I thought it might work:)

I am an independent contractor that works from home...my job is great and very flexible but I am going through a slow period where I am not getting the hours I am used to...so I am looking for a part-time job to supplement the money that's not coming in right now :guilty: . I'd want something I could do in the evenings (available between 4-11pm any night including weekends) maybe 3-4 nights a week.

I have a BA in English/Written Communication and my only work experience is 10 years as a paralegal with the same law firm I contract with now.

The only thing I know of for evening work is retail but I don't have any retail experience. Would anyone hire me with no experience? I'd be fine with a retail job, especially somewhere I could get a decent discount on stuff we need (i.e. NOT the Disney store because I'd likely spend my entire check on things we want, not need). I was thinking maybe Target, BJ's or a supermarket.

Beyond retail, does anyone have ideas of what other evening jobs might I look into? Are there any websites that specialize in part-time jobs with non-traditional hours (most things on Monster and HotJobs are just full-time 9-5 stuff).

My other dilemma is that dh is pretty adamant about me NOT getting another job. He thinks he should because he's the guy  But if he did he'd have no time with the kids and I think they would be happier with a balance of both of us. So I am hoping that if I can find a job that makes sense he might reconsider. The problem is if I end up with a minimum wage job then 20-some hours a week won't be that much of an impact on our income but if it is a bit more than minimum wage or has some kind of perk (discount, etc.) that makes it worthwhile.

Does anyone have any ideas or have a part-time job they really like? If it matters, I am in Central NJ. I'm open to any and all ideas:) Thanks!

You could possibly look into doing some nighttime filing and photocopying and such for offices. I know that's a big thing around here lately.

I have been looking for the same kind of part-time job for years now. Recently I was told about a website called "Craigslist." I went on the site and imediately found a worthwile part-time night/weekend job. I almost have my Master's degree and I stay at home with my kids during the day. I live in South Jersey....the job I just got is at UMDNJ (University of Medicine & Dentistry) I believe they have several campuses all over NJ. Look on their HR page maybe. The pay is very good if you have a B.A. Good Luck!

For retail--they just want customer service experience. So if you do that in your current capacity, you very well could get hired. Think about it--they have a bunch of high school kids working for them as well, probably as their first job :).

The other thing you could check is hostessing at a restuarant--it could pave the way into a server position and if you get the experience, you can even try getting in at a nicer restuarant where they tip better.

I can't tell where not to a part time job is the TJ Max INC. they stores include:
HomeGoods, Marshell's,and A.J. Wrights and they discount is only 10%precent. Stay away from them.

I would stay away from retail peroid. Because they believe in cutting hours like crazy and the pay is aweful.

I was just at my local YMCA walking the track tonight at 9 pm while the mens basketball league was playing and a women was running the clock. I thought that must be a pretty good part time job. The kids are in bed. The Y is open until 10 or 11 and she probably gets a free membership.

If you can get in somewhere, waiting tables is a very nice supplemental income. When you consider tips you can make 10-30/hr. depending on what type of place you work. It's a fun job too, but can be a bit stressful at times.

How about the front desk at a hotel? They usually have an evening shift and a lot of times you can get a pretty good discount with that "brand".

:) Hello, I too am looking and have been searching disboards as well I have a few suggestions that have not yet been posted.
1. You could substitue teach ( I am a teacher in NJ and have two young children and school hours are great you could still spend Qt time with your girls and if you want to do your paralegal stuff at night after their asleep you can)

2. I found this web site called west, you can make your own hours and work from home people who have tried it say its fairly easy I am going to start the testing this weekend. You dont have to pay anything to start and people who do it say its legit. here is the thread address go on and do some reading it will help:

The retail idea sound great, and to put my two cents in; I agree with the balance of time I think its super important for us to spend time with our kids.

Good Luck

What about a Supermarket? I work at one part time (but I don't really like it). I had some cash experience from 10 years ago or so. I also work part time at CURVES...it's a gym for women, basically all I do is talk to the clients and make sure they are using the machines properly, but they may not be open the hours you are looking for.

The operations centers for banks have many part-time evening jobs. Go to the website for each bank in your area and run a search for "proof operators" or "encoders." It is basically data-entry work, such as encoding dollar amounts and account numbers. They usually pay a base salary (slightly more than minimum wage), plus an incentive based on how fast and how accurate you are. There are also other types of part-time evening jobs at banks, too.

You could also do telemarketing with a company such as DialAmerica.

Good luck!

Being a server/bartender is a great part time job. The place I work at PT I make between $400-500 a week, and that is working 5 nights a week, it is about 25 hours a week. Plus it is very flexible with taking time off and picking up extra if you need to. I am now training as a bartender and the money will be so much better. You may want to look into it, unless it is something you absolutley do not want to do.

Impressive thread. I'm going to mention this to DH and see if we can arrange to do this....Both of us work FT outside the home. Sharing computer with one spouse who games for hours and the other DISing could pose a problem. There is always someone on the computer when we're home.....Might be reason enough to buckle down and purchase that second PC.

Check out answering services or call centers in your area!

I manage an answering service and believe me, I am always looking for good 2nd shift employees! Basic requirements are typing, common sense and a professional phone manner.

It's a nice job because it's usually in a casual office and basically you are sitting talking on the phone all night and it is usually pretty flexible as far as hours go.

At my answering service, we answer for alot of doctors, lawyers, heating and cooling companies, apartment complexes, home nursing agencies, ect...basically any company that can get after office hours emergency calls and needs a live person to answer their phone and dispatch calls.

I have a friend in Northeast Ohio who is currently looking for a second shift job. Is your company still looking to hire? If so, can you PM me the details? Thanks! :goodvibes

Large chain restaurants will hire experience-less servers (and host staff, too)

Dont know if you'd be up for it, but quite frankly the money is excellent.

You can work in 30 minute to 1 hour increments--so you can schedule accordingly. :goodvibes
