OT-Chocolate Stand

Kids came home this week from school with chocolate bars for fund raising.

They're not allowed to go door to door so my youngest one had this idea.

The school sent home a letter saying they didn't want students selling the chocolates door to door.

I think it is a CYA (cover your donkey) on the schools part. Some lawyer at the school board worried about a lawsuit.

I don't see the problem though. If my daughter did want to sell them door to door I would accompany her.

Yes it's a whole safety issue thing now. We are in the middle of chocolate bar sales now. The older kids are still going door to door though (grade 6) and then I remind them they know my daughters grade 2 and 4 so we have our share to sell! We have sold a few to the neighbours since we know them well but the rest go with DH to work. He has sold 2 boxes that way. I remember the days of going door to door selling the bars but I guess for the most part those days are done/gone? Depends on the size of the community maybe. We are small and even here it is being done less. I think it is great that your daughter set up a table to sell them; we live in a court and would never get enough people passing by.

Our street isn't that busy either. When she came up with the idea, I encouraged it and helped get everything together.

As for the "stranger danger", children are more at risk via someone they know.

But it when it comes to our children's safety every parent must be prudent

That's really cute! I guess a lot of schools are fundraising now, I've seen quite a few chocolate bar "stands" pop up at work

Our school has 'banned' candy sales. Kids have to sell candles and wrapping paper among other things..frankly, I'd almost rather donate and maybe get some local coupons for exchange. Most of the stuff they sell is impossibly priced and the organization gets a VERY small % profit. The coupon books and scratch cards have a better %. It's just not an easy situation. For the kids to do something they have to raise money. I am treasurer for my sons organization and we are all the time trying to find new ways to make money so the kids can go on trips and competitions. It's a hard thing...but we do it because we want to see them experience things..kinda like taking trips with the family.

Hope she makes her 'quota'.

I don't think it's entirely a safety issue about the D to D sales... I know our school has incurred some bad will (opposite of good will) in the community over sending little ones hawking stuff up and down the street to people who don't have kids in the schools. And we've had some imposters... kids selling candy bars "for the school" when I know darned well there's no fundraiser going on and they're just pocketing the cash. But the booth-on-the-street idea is great, if people actually walk in your neighborhood! You might get to meet some neighbors you've never exchanged a word with before.

Our school sold the entertainment books this year, our first year at a new school, and the note said "don't sell to strangers", which I thought was great. (After terrible choc bars last year--I wouldn't pay for those puppies unless I had to--yuck! And that's saying a LOT for me and chocolate.) It's probably not such a high-risk activity, really, but it's hard to justify with our general sense of...I dunno, caution with regard to strangers.

That's a great idea, the stand--she's in view and not forcing anything on anyone.
