We're getting locked out because our Union is fighting for us to have careers - the Corp would like to see everyone as a temp or on contract and do away with permanent employees.

So... anyone know who's hiring video editors right now? Got a mortgage to pay and a Disney trip to finance... Benefits and a pension plan preferred!

FYI - Contact your MP to tell them the CBC is necessary to be on the air or else Hockey Night in Canada might not be back on the airwaves in time.

CBC files 72-hour lockout notice
Last Updated Tue, 27 Sep 2005 21:31:38 EDT
CBC News
CBC management has filed a 72-hour lockout notice, meaning job action could take place Monday morning if an agreement is not reached with the union representing 5,500 workers.

"CBC doesn't want a work stoppage and we are extremely disappointed to have to take this action," the corporation said in a communiqué Thursday night. "However, after almost 15 months of negotiations, our key issues remain unresolved."

The notice does not automatically mean that a work stoppage will occur Monday. The corporation acknowledged that both sides are still at the bargaining table.

Earlier, the corporation presented the union with a revised offer. But the Canadian Media Guild, representing the CBC, said the proposal does not resolve the critical issues, namely the CBC's insistence on a new contract that will allow it to hire most new employees on a casual basis.

The Guild also asked that those issues be negotiated independently.

The corporation says it needs greater flexibility when it comes to hiring.

Contracting out, employees' rights to be reassigned in case of downsizing and compensation for overtime are other key issues that remain unresolved.

Labour action could have a significant impact on program schedules, particularly its radio and online coverage. CFL football and NHL hockey would remain on the broadcast schedule, along with acquired programming and movies.

Last month, the union voted 87.3 per cent endorsing the union, including calling a strike if necessary, if its negotiators couldn't get a deal with the corporation. The earliest date for a strike or a lockout would be Aug. 15.

Negotiations for a new contract began in May 2004.

Seems to be a sign of the times for unionized employees...And yes I am a unioized employee. Everyday is a fight...everyday the struggle continues.
I'll spread the word and hope this issue is resolved quickly. Public support is the best ally at times.

An injury to one is an injury to all.

Am I reading this right? September 2005?

tone.def I hope everything works out for you. :guilty:

We know what a tough life it is for the workforce too as my DH is at Stelco and we've been through the mill this past 2 years with all the troubles under CCAA protection! :guilty:

On a good note though......DH retires after 34 years of service tomorrow morning! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Good luck! :)

thanks Sammi! congrats to your husband!!!

I know there are a couple other Dis'ers out here who are also employees of the Mother Corp - see ya on the picket line! Dis meet on Tueday???

If anyone out there is getting married or having a special event, I also do videography - PM me and I'll set up a DIS friend discount. I had a cancellation for a Saurday in September and most of October and November is open...

I was a full-time unionized technician for 24 years with CBC and was permanently laid off. With a young family still at home my future looked bleak at best. I now have a great job at a university and couldn't be happier. The layoff was the best thing that ever happened to me professionally. No more constant strike threats and no more constant layoff notices that actually have become the culture of the national broadcaster. I could write volumes on CBCs treatment of its' staff, but I've moved on. All I can say is hang in there and look for work elsewhere before the CBC finds a way to eliminate all it's full time employees.

Hey Bob!

Thanks for the advice, the resume had been polished up lately and I sent it out to a few places today. I just don't want to go back to being freelance, I did that for a few years and after 2001 things went downhill and sucked! It's better now, but I like the routine of going to the same place everyday. Maybe CTV will call me...

Its seems that you would probably be better off looking else where because by all accounts ( I know some ex CBC employees) they are not what you might call a fantastic company to work for. I'm sure your services would be better utilized in one of the competitors.
By the way, good luck in the struggle.

I'm also a CBC employee based in Toronto.

Tone.def what suite do you work in?

Aren't you accustomed to walking around the building?

We were on stike in 99 for 7 1/2 weeks and locked out Xmas 2001.

A lot of us were suprised when CBC was named to one of the top companies to work for in Canada. Obviously it was a bunch of management types slapping each other on the back how they screw employees.

I started my annual leave today and will be going to WDW from Aug 21 to Sept 3rd. Back to work or the picket line on September 6.

To wee-haggis

Most of us work at the CBC because we work with talented, commited passionate folks who love providing canadian programming to Canadians.

Unfortuneately we are run by the boneheads who headed up Canada Post in the 70's & 80's.

Well said!

I only started here in 2002 when I decided that freelance was the pits. Sometimes policy here is the pits, but the people I work with a great. I'm not sure how this place became one of the top companies to work for in Canada... we don't get beer carts that come around on Fridays!

I work in ES 20 - evenings... Where might you be found Ham Ham? Enjoy WDW!!!

Pleeease don't get me started on CPC....We're losing health benefits, job security, severance package, etc etc etc. It's not about the worker, it's about the dollar. It doesn't matter if you work in a unionized or non-unionized workplace, it's all about the money.
Everyday I go to work, I keep reminding myself "I'm going to Disney".

Congratulations to your husband Sammi! I grew up in Hamilton and my Dad worked for Stelco for 32 years. There were some hard times. Luckily he retired just before the bankruptcy protection.

Ham Ham, I know what you mean about walking this building! It seems like it was only yesterday! When I moved over to CMG I hoped my walking days were over but then the merge!

At least this time it isn't going to be freezing! But there is still time for them to dig out a deal! Trying to think positive because both dh and I are at the CBC and this will be the third one for both of us.

So sending Pixie Dust to the negogiators on both sides! And all the dedicated employees of the CBC! :wizard:

Tondef

Did you recently take a Photoshop course?

If so, I sat behind you.

Maybe we can have a Disney meeting on the picket line beside the burning drum near the John street door.

I think you did sit behind me in the Photoshop course Ham Ham!!! June right?

small world!!!

Wow- it's official - they did it. Today was my first locked out day.

What a great way for a corporation to say "We appreciate our employees. Instead of them having careers, we want short term contracts for all - it will benefit them and US better in the long run, no one needs benefits or pension plans any more, well, except us in management."

I beg anyone who cares about our nation's public boadcaster to contact their MP and let them know how important the CBC is to you and how important it is for employees to have full-time, permanent careers because programming and content will suffer even more if the CBC continues on thier fast-food model of staffing.

...and I'm done.

Well tone.def welcome to the real CBC.

Your boss appreciates all the work you do for them.... However the clowns who actually run joint would love to roll back your wages, not need to pay you over time and if & when you head out on maternity leave & when you return you'll be earasing tapes in the 4th sub basemnet on the night shift.

To quote the managers, it would be a great place to work...too bad we're stuck with the employees.

The corpse wants to have just a shell of a structure and not need to pay benefits or train people.

With that said it is people like yourself who make the CBC what it is, a great place to make Canadian Televison for Canadians. Nothing against the private networks, Global, CTV, City etc. I think it is great they rebroadcast mostly american programming or in the case of CITY run the same shows over and over again on CITY, Bravo, A-Channel, The NEW what ever, MUCH, CP24, M3, Space, BookTV, FT etc.....

Don't give up just yet we were out for 7 1/2 weeks in 99. :hourglass

Just wait until the folks who hate the CBC start flaming and dumping all over us.

You are quite right...it's about the money. But not money for the workers, so they can earn a decent wage and have health benefits and a pension. I saw some brothers and sisters out on the line today. I hope this will get solved quickly and in favor of the workers.
In Solidarity.
