I have been to Cape Henlopen as a day visitor but never a camper. I know I will have water but no electric. Can anyone tell me about specific sites to request? Any other information about camping there would be appreciated. I have already checked out the website. We plan to be there the last two weeks of August. I expect hot weather based on previous trips to the area.

Thanks!!

We live three or four miles from Cape Henlopen, so we don't camp there. You know more about the campground then we do! But don't miss King's Homemade Ice Cream on Second Street in Lewes. And Irish Eyes has great crab cakes. Hope the weather will be ideal for you.

We camped there a couple of years ago for a few days at the end of August (just a couple of days after returning from a week at the Poly - talk about a contrast in accomodations!) In general the campsites on the outside are larger than the ones on the inside - we shared a site with friends and had room for 2 tents easily on our site. You're only allowed one vehicle AT the site, the other must be in the camp parking lot, which really isn't far. The ground is REALLY sandy, and I'd go for sites toward the back of the campground as they tend to be higher and drainage should run away from your site. It's HOT and sticky however so sleeping comfortably can be a challenge. Water and showers/bathrooms are OK, not spectacular but servicable. During the week typically isn't full but weekends are from what I hear. The beach at the state park is very good and is lifeguarded. HTH - let me know if you have other specific questions as I have a friend who camps there yearly!

Hi, OP here! I read on some other RV/camping forums about the bug problems all summer long. Here in New England, the biting flies have the decency to leave (die) by the fourth of July. I am concerned because I have an elderly dachshund (17) and the complaints I heard about the ticks, biting flies and skeeters make me wonder if I should wait until next year when the Indian River Inlet campground is re-opened and we can camp with A/C and fewer bugs.

Bugs and mosquitoes can be a big problem, but they shouldn't be quite so bad at the end of August. Depends on weather conditions, of course.
