For Christmas, my mom asked for a "World Vision" goat.
One healthy dairy goat can yield up to 250 litres of milk annually to provide essential protein and life-changing income. Two goats can be bred to produce from 2 to 3 kids a year and eventually multiply into a whole herd. These practical and robust animals eat grass and leaves and do well in harsh climates. A great gift for granny or the kids!
The World Vision Canada site lists it for $100 - on the US site it is $75.

I would prefer to contribute to something local -Canada or Ontario. Does anyone have any suggestions of a reputable site?

Why don't you sponser a family (Christmas Hamper) in your community for Christmas?

How about donating money to your city's foodbank? They can always use the money(especially this time of year) and you'd be guaranteed it your donation was benefitting local people.

Perhaps your Mom has a reason for asking for a world vision goat.. so that is what I would get her. When it is a gift I do not think that your own personal preferences should come into consideration. Then if you want to contribute to a charity within Canada..that would be great as well!

I have to agree. Your Mom asked for a goat. If she wanted to donate to a local charity she would have asked for that.

I agree as well. It's her Xmas present so make her happy and get her what she asked for.

You can get her a gift card at canadahelps.org.

This non-profit organization provides a way to give online, through a credit card, to ANY Canadian registered charity. There is a fee to cover what the credit card companies charge and for administration, but it's small and, if you gave directly to the charity, they'd have to pay these costs out of your donation anyway. (This is why many small local charities don't have a way to donate by credit card... we can't afford to pay the fees and do the accounting required by the credit card companies!)

If you give her a charitable gift card, she can go and use it to donate a goat through World Vision Canada, if she wants. Or she can give it to her local food bank. Or whatever.

Anyway, just a thought...

We use oxfamunwrapped.ca - you can buy two goats from them for almost the same price as one from World Vision :)
