Hi there...we are thinking of going to Camelback Mountain for snow tubing. Has anyone done that? Any tips or suggestions. We are thinking of doing Saturday-Sunday.....any thoughts on good affordable lodging.

We live in Jackson NJ so only about 2 hours away.

My boys are 14 & 9....

:coffee:

DS wants to do this also. It's about 2 1/2 hours from where we are and we were thinking of doing a day trip. I'm curious to see if anyone else posts about this. DS saw a commercial and said "wow that looks fun, I want to do that!"

I have not seen the commercial.

But it's not on the main part of the mountain. *unless they changed it this year.
It is actually right before you get to the ski part- you pass it on the left.
It's ok fun. Not blow your mind fun and it is tiring as you are lugging that tube. I do see on the website that they are adding new t bars this year- so maybe they'll stop that dragging thing. It gets crowded and the 3 hours go very fast.

We live within 45 minutes. If we head there this weekend I'll let you know how it looks.
But it's really a one day thing and it will be PACKED on the weekends. It's small. I'm going to have to look for that commercial

Lodging? Great wolf is nearby and that's a trip in itself. I think there is an Econolodge?

Thanks...we are looking into President's Weekend but are very worried it will be packed. Do you think Sunday or Monday first thing would be better than Saturday?

What about other ski tubing places in the area? Anyones better than others....or more options.

We would like to have the ability to do single or family tubes....

My ds went to our local tubing place (Campgaw, in NJ), over the last break, and it was PACKED - as in, they went down the hill 3 times in 4 hours!

I know the one at Big Boulder has a LIFT for the tubes! Which believe me you will want. I don't know if camelback has added one this year.

We have only been to the Camelback one so I can't suggest any of the others. But I would think they're all similar.

On the Sat/sun/monday my opinion is that most people SKI first- so if they arrive Saturday that's ski day and Sunday all full day ski- monday leave day - tube day.
So I would think Sat. Sun would be better. But just my unofficial opinion.

Hi All,

I live minutes from Big Boulder/Jack Frost and about 20 minutes to Camelback. I don't ski or tube, but I have heard Big Boulder/Jack Frost are way better than Camelback.

If you go to BB/JF there is a Ramada at the Turnpike exit and a Best Western on 115 in Blakeslee. Stay out of the little motels....yuck

We did Camelback tubing a few years back as part of a ski trip with our church youth group, and in our minds, it was NOT worth the cost ESPECIALLY if you're going President's Day weekend...

We had over an hour wait in line (with us adults holding the tube) for a two minute max, straight (and not that fast IMHO) shot down the slope. woo-hoo. :crazy2:

Skiing is fun there, though! (We went there the whole time I was a volunteer, so I can't comment on Jack Frost/Big Boulder, 'cause I haven't been there since I was a teen.)

If you're ok with rustic lodgings - we always stayed at Kirkwood Presbyterian Camp which is nearby, in one of their largest cabins (4 rooms of bunk beds, central room w/ fireplace plus kitchen.) They have a heated caboose(!) that has capacity for 4. ($55/night for non presbytery members)

My ds went to our local tubing place (Campgaw, in NJ), over the last break, and it was PACKED - as in, they went down the hill 3 times in 4 hours!

DD is going there tomorrow after school..I hope its not that crowded! they will only be there 4-6 !!

I too live near Camelback, and it's not worth the money or agravation...However I do think you should try ALPINE Mt....a previous poster gave the information. I have been there with kids ranging from 2-18 and we had a great time. It is cheaper than the bigger places, not as crowded, and they have a "snow tube lift" You sit in the tube and hold the rope and it brings you up the hill. I agree with staying away from local motels..."yuk" is an understatement. You could try the Hampton Inn in Stroudsburg...it's very nice and clean...second choice would be the Clarion, I guess. I know these hotels are not in the heart of the snow tubing, etc., but you'll be happier this way...Besides, Camelback is most likely booked for pres. day weekend already....Good Luck!!

Are you near Montage Mountain? We did tubing there over presidents weekend one year and it was a blast! We stayed at the bottom of the moutain at a Hampton Inn that was very nice. There is a movie theater on the mountain, outdoor ice skating, and we had a great time. There is a lift for the tubes so no dragging the tubes up the mountain and it is on the same mountain as the skiing so if someone in your party wants to ski you are all together for the most part.

There was a Comfort Inn Suites there too that was nice as well next to the Hampton Inn.
Good luck and have fun!

i've done snow tubing at shawnee quite a while ago when I worked there. It was very fun!! It's been a long time, but back when I did it you didn't have to carry anything, you sat on a tube and there were handles that drug you to the top. I would definitely recommend it!

What to wear??? Does anyone have tips on what to wear?

What type of pants? I assume you need boots any other suggestions for clothing?

I agree with PP. Blue Mountain is way better for tubing than Camelback.
We went to Camelback on Presidents day weekend and it was not crowded at all. I think the cold keep everyone away. We had fun.
Also,I think all of the mountians have some sort of tow or lift to the top of the tubing runs. Blue Mountian (as of 2 years ago) had a tow to pull you up in the tube. CamelBack has like a converyor belt thing you stand on and ride up the mountian. Kinda like in the airport but going up hill.

Hope you have fun!:)

We have taken our family to Jack Frost the last two years. Our kids are 14, 13, 8, and 4. They also have the tow up the mountain, and the tubing is a blast for all age groups. Even Grandma has accompanied us and had fun.

Also, keep in mind that Jack Frost and Big Boulder are like sister resorts and they take each other's tickets for skiing and snowboarding (not 100% certain about the tubing, but since that time frame is more limited it is less likely you would travel between resorts).

We went last Friday and and had a great day. Weekends and especially holidays are more crowded, so I would seriously consider a shorter one night trip on a non-holiday weekend and even with less time there you will probably get more done. We live about 90 minutes away and find day trips completely doable.

We just went this saturday at Sno-mountain - the old Montage...
It was sooooooo cold -10 on the mountain that night - 28 in our group went and only 7 lasted the 3 hours - it was very very fast and if their legs are not long enought to drag to stop themselves they plow into a blow up pillow type thing and net at the end of the shoots... It can be a very hard it - alot of the younger kids didn't care for it and wouldn't go back down - they got air on the hills and couldn't stop.. others said it was too darn cold.. lol..
but the 7 who lasted were all boys around the age of 10-11.. they bundled up VERY well - if it is reallycold I would suggest 2 pairs of gloves - one wasn't enough for them - hat scarfs boots ect...
