Back in 1992 I registered for china, I have 16 place settings and a bunch of serving pieces. I opened 6 place settings to display, but the rest are in their original packaging. Where would be the best place to put these up for sale?

Depending on what the China pattern is, you can also see about selling it locally, at "antique" stores. You can look on Ebay for some help as well, type in your pattern, and find similar patterns, see if the market is overly saturated with the pattern, what reasonable prices seem to be on Ebay, etc. And you can look into any local auctions as well.

thank you both...I will look into your suggestions...anyone else have ideas?

People just don't buy china any more. I've seen beautiful sets at ridiculously low prices at estate sales and they never seem to sell.

sheila...lol...that is why I don't want it...I never even unpacked it!!!

Have 13 settings of Charleston and use them. There is still a market for china just not as big. I'm sure you'll have success if you sell it at a reasonable price.

Just to let you know ... I'm in the same boat, looking to sell china we got as wedding gifts more than 20 years ago. I contacted replacements.com through their website -- you have to give them specifics (manufacturer and pattern name, you can figure out what they call it through their site), adn they send you an "offer." My pattern was made in both Portugal and Japan -- the Portuguese pieces are selling for next to nothing, and the Japanese pieces are selling for something, but not a whole lot. This set was about $65/5 pc place setting in 1988, but it looks like (if it's from Japan, I haven't checked yet) that I could sell it to replacements for about $30/ place setting. Just to give you an idea of what they're offering!

Wow. Why don't people want china plates anymore??

I still have my great grandmother's setting. It's only used at Christmas time, which is when we used it growing up. I've looked at that replacement site, some of the basic pieces go for cheap, while the gravy boat and other serving dishes are near a 100$ a piece.
I always thought it to be the norm to have an every day set and a fine set for special occasions.

I purchased a Noritake pattern at an auction and decided I didn't need/want the broth cups (double handled tea cup). I contacted Replacements, and they gave me a number. Well, the shipping would have cost more than what they were offering me for the cups. Needless to say, I still have the cups. I frequent auctions, and, yes, china goes extremely cheap. The set I got cost me $70 - it was an incomplete service for 12 with some beautiful serving pieces. I purchased it for the platters, vegetable bowls, and square dessert/luncheon dishes. Well worth the $70.

Is your pattern still in demand? Was it popular when you picked it out? I would try Craig's list or maybe an ad in the paper. I personally don't think Replacements is the way to go.

I have purchased from the replacements site and ebay. I hope you find an option that works for you.

I don't have any china, but I would love to.

I do happen to have DH's Grandmother's Fostoria. I have over 160 pieces and I will keep it for my girls. I do use it though. Did a table setting at a ladies luncheon a few months ago (that my MIL came to), and she said she knew Grandma wanted me to have it because out of anyone, I actually use it.

I've been to the actual Replacements.com store -- I saw it time after time right by the interstate and finally went in to look -- and they have a buyer's mentality: Buy low, sell high. I don't think they're the best choice if you're looking to make something from your china.

I suggest ebay, though that does leave you with the task of packing.

Personally, I suggest keeping it and using it. I love my china.
