OT: Anyone own a FLIP UltraHD camera?

I don't have the HD, but I do have a Flip - 2nd generation. I LOVE IT. It's SUPER easy to use, and the video it creates is pretty good quality. I couldn't recommend Flip enough - it fits easily in your pocket, and the software is right on the camera, so all you do is plug it into your computer and you can save the videos, create movies etc. I used it a lot during my 2 week CA trip and have lots of great video.

I have one and I love it! So much easier than lugging around my video camera.
I hung it off the end of a lanyard and when I needed it, it was right there.
I taped the Spaceship Earth ride and it came out great.
I've had no issues with it at all.
Just remember to hold it steady and move it slow. That will take a little getting used too.
Good luck with your decision. :)

Any difference b/w the Ultra and the Mino other than size?

IOW - is the smaller size worth paying an extra $50?

Renysmom had one at DAP and I really liked it. I've seen a couple reviews where they indicated they liked the performance of the UltraHD over the Mino HD. If it doesn't come with an HDMI make sure you try to get it at monoprice.com before you pay through the roof elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure I'll have a Flip for PCC 2.0 . :)

I have a Flip - not the HD version and love it. The software that came with it makes it terrifically easy to upload video to YouTube and does simple editing. I believe the HD version has rechargable batteries, while the standard version allows you to use AA. Being able to switch out batteries on the fly is handy.

Do keep in mind that both versions of the Flip limit you to the onboard memory - you can't pop a card out and add additional memory.

I love my Flip and wouldn't trade it for the world. The slightly boxy form factor for the non-hd model doesn't bother me at all. It fits in a coat pocket easily and the video is quite good. If you want to compare, search on youtube and you can see output from both cameras.

Andy Ihnatko has a good review of both the Flip and the Kodak competitor here. You might want to take a look and watch his video samples. The Kodak is a little cheaper (I think) and allows you to buy your own memory card - so it is possible to swap cards out with the Kodak.

Dave Zatz did a review of the Kodak competitor (and he was at Disney when he did the filming!).

Finally - here's David Pogue's review.

Hope this helps!

SO - the only way to charge it is via USB? The reviews you linked (thanks!) only seem to mention charging it via USB.

They also mentioned the Zi6 (which is now an 8) as being cheaper - but it's not by much - and the memory cards are crazy expensive (around $95).

I got an HD Flip and love it. I agree with all the above.

The only downside I could find is that I wish the zoom worked a bit better. I find at times the zoom is inadiquate.

Here's a sample from my Flip HD:

Chad - is the only way to charge it via USB or can you also have spare batteries?

How long does it take to charge if you're only using USB?

Is this the kind of cable I'd need?

6FT Mini-HDMI (Type C) to HDMI (Type A) Specification 1.3a 30AWG Cable

How much taping can you get before the internal memory is full ?

The Flip UltraHD does take AA batteries as well as USB recharge. When I take the Flip on vacation, I charge it USB first and bring rechargeable AA's with me, because I don't travel with a computer.

As mentioned by George. I bought my Flip Ultra HD just before DAP and I LOVE it and carry it with me everywhere.

All my DAP video was taped on it. You can see them here:

I purchased a backup battery and carry that with me as well as 2 new AA batteries so that is no problem for me. I also bought a very sturdy mini tripod that I use closed to hold the Flip at times when taping longer events like shows and parades, etc.. Just makes it more comfortable to hold.

You won't be disappointed!

Some more questions (thanks for everyone's help)

1) Anyone know when the latest version came out? I'd hate to buy one now and a new version be released in April. :)

2) is the only difference between the ultra and Mino the size?
