We were going to bring our children for a few days to Saratoga, NY. My dh always wanted to see the racetrack and we think the kids will get a kick out of it. We are staying in a Fairfield Inn in Saratoga. Are there any other things to do in the area with children? I think Lake george is 1/2 hour away, maybe we will spend the day there one day. Any thoughts are appreciated. Linda

PS Don't worry we are going on our "real" vacation to see Mickey for a week in October! :cool1:

My sister lives in Saratoga and I go there often. How old are your kids? There is a cute children's museum in Saratoga, but it is certainly better for younger kids. Mine are 3 and 5 and adored it. There is also the National Museum of Dance and also Racing, they are neat. You should definitely check out Paper Dolls of Saratoga on Henry Street, my sister's stationery shop. :rotfl: Saratoga Performing Arts Center has some great outdoor performances in the summer, you can bring a picnic and eat on the lawn while you watch the ballet, orchestra, opera, etc. There is some great shopping, a neat historical society in an old Casino, Yaddo (artist's retreat with gorgeous gardens you can see). If you can get away, you could do a mineral soak at one of the spas, I did that one time pre-kids and it was fun. It wasn't too pricey, I was a poor grad student back then so I wouldn't have done it if it was. There is also an old, restored carousel in the park downtown, kind of fun to ride. we love the restaurants in Saratoga, too!!

Lake George is fun, but very touristy. We did a boat ride there and did some shopping.

Have fun!!!

I live between Lake George and Saratoga. My kids love the track. We get there early to grab a picnic table in the shade near where the walk the horses out before the race. Then we go up to the fence to watch the end or the races. They have a great time. I agree with all the other places the pps mentioned.

Lake George has lots of mini golf courses, arcades, Fort William Henry, Fun spot, Adventure Racing, Great Escape, Magic Forest, a Rodeo (near Lake George), outlets, Boat rides (Mini HAHA...I can't think of the name of the others), Adirondack Extreme (something like that they have rope climbing courses), You could go tubing or rafting on a mild river (Tubby tubes), Up yonda farms has fun nature programs for children.

Glens Falls is closer to Saratoga than Lake George and it has the Hyde an art museum and Explore a children's museum/playplace

Please let me know if you would like more information about any of these. Also if you tell me the dates you'll be here I can look up any special programs that are goin on.

Live here also! There is also horseback riding, go-karts, swimming, there are fire works on Lake George on Thursday nights, the boats (lake george steamboat co) have a 4-6 hr morning cruise on the mohican, a lunch or dinner cruise on the Lac De Saint Sacrament, or an hour cruise around the lake, departing almost every 1.5 (minnie haha) there is also Shoreline cruises, much smaller boats, not sure of the tours they offer. I believe you can still Parasail also. The main drive through lake george has tons of food and shopping, mini-golf, arcades, a wax museum and a haunted mansion (not the best in the world but decent for the younger crowd) and don't forget the soft ice cream shops and there also is the Glen Twin Drive in, a old drive-in movie theater. double feature nightly, new movies, adults are $8 each I think kids are $3.50 or 4 under 3 free!

I'm from Ohio, unfortunately. My husband went camp in the adirondacks, and we honeymooned there. I lobed it up there.

We try to visit each year. DH's family is from Rochester and get a cottage in the Adirondicks every year. We stay in Sabael on Indian Lake. If you go from the Indian Lake village to Speculator stop at the Lake Store for ice cream. We like the Adirondick Museum also. If you go as far as Old Forge, try the Nutty Putty putt-putt golf......if it is still open.

Yes, I am from MS and love the Adirondicks. I am happy to say that for the first time in five years, the lake was warm enough for me to go in. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the great info. I knew I could count on my fellow disers to help us out. I should of put the ages of my children (sorry), we have 7 year old b/g twins and a 16 mo. old son. We are arriving early on Sun, Aug. 1st (we live around 2 hours south of Saratoga) and plan to spend the day at the raceway. On Monday, we were thinking of driving up to the Lake George area for the day. Does anyone know how far? I'm guessing around 1/2 hour. Then we will leave on Tuesday to come home. Thanks everyone, for all the help, much appreciated. Linda
