I know it depends on the individual child. DS is 4 and we'd like to move him to top bunk in the next couple of months. He night wakes about 1-3 times a month for water, restroom, etc., and we fear he will forget he is so high...Anyone want to share experiences with this?

DS went to the top at 4. He wasn't getting up at night for the regular stuff. But he was getting up with bloody noses. We keep a tissue box in his bed but he will always come and get me instead of calling out.

We have played musical beds and rooms the past 3 years so my 3 oldest have all been on the top bunk at on time or another.

my daughter was 5 when we put her in the top bunk. I worried about it, but she proved that she can get in and out of it safely, I also added a brighter night lite so she can get up and down the ladder in case of a bathroom trip in the middle of the night

my oldest daughter went up to the top bunk at almost 3.5 yr old.
but it's go a fully enclosed fabric "tent" over it.
she'd have to cut thru it with scissors to be able to fall out.
so we were not too worried.
she has a slide to get down fast if she wants to.
she uses the slide more as a ladder than she does the real ladder.
she's been fine up there ever since.

Regarding the top bunk issue... is he moving because he needs to share a room with a sibling? We had this come up last year when our third child arrived. I didn't feel comfortable with the top bunk thing - too many times we end up carrying in a sleeping child, or laying in bed with him when he was sick or to read books, etc. To save space, we bought two twin captain beds. With the storage under the beds (four large drawers and a cubby on each) we didn't need to put a dresser/bureau in the room and it has really worked out wonderfully! Good luck!

We got DS bunks at age 7 and he only slept on the top twice. He does not like it at all. I am glad he does not like the top since he is a serious sleep walker and gets worse the older he gets.

ours went to the top bed at 3yr and a 3 months he was just ready. He could get down on his own so we figured it was ok.

We bought bunk beds when my ds was 4 and dd was 1.5. We put ds on top and moved dd out of a crib to the bottom. They stayed that way for about 6 months and ds started not wanting to be on top. We unbunked the beds which took up a large majority of their bedroom. Last weekend (about 6 months later) , they started saying they wanted them bunked again. But ds (now 5) did not want on top (he's afraid of heights so that could be the problem), so we put dd3 (turned 3 in December) on top. I was a little worried about her getting down to go to the bathroom in the night so I put a nightlight in the outlet right next to the steps. She's doing great and loves her bed up there. I can't say I wasn't a little nervous and I still am when I see her walking around up there. Hopefully, we never have a fall from there. By the way, the label imprinted on the bed says not to put a child under 6 on the top bunk.

Our bunk beds have a warning label on them that says children under 6 should not be on the top bunk. Of course there are a lot of variables when making the decision, night waking, size of child, etc. I personally would not put my child on top if they regularly wake at night.

We're thinking about getting our DS bunks and hes 7 going on 8. We asked his doc about it and he thought it would be ok. I think 6-8 is probably ok depending on the child and what type of safety precautions you take. I've seen the tents in magazines that can go on the top - as long as there is no way their head can get stuck I would think that would be ok. Any less then 6 I would say no way to the top bunk. I've heard one too many horror stories.
