OT - 2nd grade discipline?

My youngest is in 1st grade and there punishment is different for moving their card, they have to run laps around the playground for each offense. This makes WAY more sense to me because sometimes kids just have to much excess energy that makes them act in all kinds of different ways and taking away the outlet (recess) and just making them stand or sit still doesn't make sense to me. I fully respect the teachers authority but if the OP tried to contact and no response she should go over her head. Also don't think she's coddling her child. I think the PP who stated that is coming from a way different perspective, high school students and 3rd graders are completely different. Hope it gets worked out!

which pp are you refering to? I think I counted 6 that said she is coddling or enabling her child. I teach high school, but I have a kindergartener. I don't codddle my 5 year old. When she gets in trouble in school there is no excuse for it and she gets punished at home as well. No debate, no question because i do not want her to end up like some of the 16 year olds I teach who are the end result of 16 years of parents making excuses for them. That was the point I was trying to make, not that 16 year olds and 2nd graders should be handled in the same way. Of course they are different, and should be disciplined in different ways, but the fundamental problem is the same. Accountability has to start there. The problems that I deal with in high school start in elementary school.

I get where you are coming from and if that's where the other poster is coming from too then my apologies. I agree.

If your son's asthma is the issue and not you not wanting him punished for his wrongdoings, have your doctor write a note that says your child needs to stay indoors for recess for medical reasons. Then he can serve his punishment out of the sun. My kids' school has no a/c so punishment inside would be just as bad as outside.

BTW my son's asthma is really bad and has been flared since school started - I'm sure it's a combination of heat and weather changes but we deal with as we need to. If his wheezing doesn't stop in the next 4 weeks, he will be starting shots at the Pulminologist every 2 weeks because his asthma is no longer controlled with meds/inhalers and he's on steriods way too often.

:grouphug::grouphug: My daughter's asthma problems were a direct result of a mold problem at the school she was in last year. Please investigate especially if the flare ups have started after he went to or back to school. I feel sorry for the children still attending the school I pulled my daughter from because some are just so very sick with asthma flare ups and the district will not do anything. I threatened legal action and my daughter was placed in a much better school that is brand new rebuilt and mold free.

Wow I just got done reading this very heated (no pun intended) thread. Just a few comments I was thinking about when I read through this topic. I don't think I am reiterating any points.

.
No A/C now that is punishment, although I guess it would make me more grateful to come home.

I am concerned with what the pediatrician may have said to the OP. It seems like she was placating you with her comment about CPS. I have never called CPS for sun exposure or school punishments, only for parents shaking babies, breaking bones, parents neglecting their children's very existence while getting high, etc. Each doctor has his or her own ideas though.

I hope that your child's pediatrician is helping with the sun exposure asthma. I'm not a pediatrician but I can tell you that as a physician I've never diagnosed it nor is there a code to bill for that. If there is let me know I'll tell the office manager. There is an asthma, exercise induced asthma, asthma unspecified, etc. Either way in mild asthma some children outgrow it, without major long-lasting sequela. Hopefully yours will.

My school was the only parochial school in our area that still had sisters (the black and white wearing kind). Punishments were up to their discretion. Looking back on that if I had to live in a convent, praying, abstaining, I'd probably take up time by thinking of creative behavioral modification techniques for kids too.

Now this is a little off topic but I didn't see any parent mention it yet (probably because it is a whole separate topic). My wife and I believe in spanking, not beating, but spanking when you did something wrong. I'll make sure to not take my child to your pediatrician though, I don't want to see CPS.

CPS for standing in the sun for 10 minutes? GIVE ME A BREAK!!! :rotfl2: We live in Florida and my kids play outside all summer IN THE SUN and I know they do not drink water every 10 minutes...I DO know that when my son gets sent to his room for something he TRIES to come out every 5 minutes for water! lol I tell him to get back to his room we do NOT live in the sahara!!!You are being played...If my son got in trouble often at school HIS BUTT WOULD BE IN TROUBLE! I have told teachers to be MORE strict when one of them are getting out of hand..
This is why you see people getting harrassed by CPS, people calling in over stupid stuff like this...THAT is not what CPS is for...because when someone calls they have to take the report even if it stupid then you have this teacher getting bothered by them and messing with her job!I am not a teacher but I feel bad for them, dealing with parents like this and parents who send sick kids to school to get everyone sick!

I have actually thought of this. His asthma seems to get worse every year when school starts. He's been in school since 8-16 and has not stopped coughing/wheezing. He takes Advair, Singulair, Zrytec and a low dose of Azithromiacin for his asthma - he also uses eyedrops for allergies and Prevacid for reflux. We have to use the Nebulizer with Duoneb atleast a couple of times a week and his Xoepenex inhaler a few times as well. We have an EpiPen both for asthma and a latex allergy but luckily we've never had to use it (came close a few times). My cousin's dh works at the school - she met him for lunch one day and their baby started coughing right after they got there - she ended up needed a breathing treatment to get it stopped. How would I go about finding out if there's something in that school affecting him?

In our school, the mold was first noticed in the ceiling tiles because the ceiling is always leaking when it rains. Their is a website known as schoolmoldhelp.org that has some great information. I would also contact your health department and ask them to check it out because there is no reason a child is being made sick by their school. Your child falls under the Americans with Disabilities act so if the school starts blowing your concerns off I would be looking into what actions you can take. I had to threaten legal action for my daughter to be moved and the first school actually refused to accept her. I have never been so thankful for someone discriminating against my child as I am in this case. My daughter is in a very wonderful school and they are safety conscious. The other school actually gave me 2 children without ever checking my identification to make sure I was on their pickup list and they even fave me the children's names associated with the numbered tag. They make it so easy to kidnap a child there and when I told my friend she was shocked. These people had never seen me before (office personnel had but not the pickup people) and just handed 2 kids over to me. :scared1:

I hope you can get some answers. Also check to see if they have had an air quality test done. The test sucks when it comes to mold but they do try to say that the school is within the normal limits. When it comes to mold there is no normal limits.

Hiya all,

wow - I do feel for the poor OP...... Over here CP laws are soooo intermingled with the Human Rights Act that I'm sure it would actually be illegal to stand a child in the full sun for any length of time.

I wouldn't like my child to be stood out in full sun either, but I'd make da** sure my child knew that it was due to their own inappropriate behaviour and that I'd be disappointed if I heard they were ever out there again.

What concerns me about a lot of replies is - don't you all have any shaded play areas over there in the US??? We have shade, water fountains, compulsory hats - parents also apply all-day sunscreen before school - we get loads of skin cancer warnings etc. And we are in the UK - hardly the sun capital of the world.

:rotfl2: Actually, yes. Our school has 2 play areas. One is a playground with play equipment (swings, slides, merry-go-rounds, etc) and the other is a playing field where they play kickball, soccer, etc. The 2 areas are connected. The playground is in full shade, the field in full sun. There are, however, no outdoor water fountains.

Honestly,, I find the thought of outdoor water fountains to be disgusting. I have seen what some have done in the ones at our soccer park and know what used to go on at my elementary school. My kids do not drink out of water fountains period but outside ones are so much more disgusting.

my dd6 got in trouble for talking quite a bit and had to sit out recess at the beginning of the school year. heck, she was just given back the privelege of sitting with other kids at a group table after being banished to her own private table facing the chalkboard for a month! she gets it honest.

i guess we're lucky because i'm in constant contact with her teacher all the time. we email each other several times a week. i really appreciate that she isn't a pushover, b/c my daughter is one that can easily push buttons, and she appreciates that i take an active role in my daughter's behavior. it's been mentioned in a few other threads in the last few days (only child, bad habits from disney tv, etc...), but my daughter is quick-witted, sharp, and very tenacious. This leads to problems. I'm thankful that she's bright and does well in class, which her teacher loves. Thank goodness for the balance!

10 minutes in the sun? Kids stand longer than that in the hot Florida sun waiting to get on Dumbo every day. I would think that running in the hot sun would dehydrate a kid faster than just standing there. But whatever.. I dunno.
