How long do keep an orphan sock before you throw it out?

I'm just curious- because it seems like I wait forever, and the other 1/2 just is MIA.

And Pop Daddy - I know you'll put your 2 cents in - can't wait to hear what your answer is!

Thanks!

Too funny. I have the same problem. I actually have an orphan basket that is pretty full. My girls have lots of different socks and its a real pain. But I learned with the baby, I only buy him the same white socks, so there is never an orphan.

Now that I think about it I'm going to throw out all the orphans right now. Or maybe we can start an orphan sock exchange;)

YEARS !!!

If you throw it out, the other one is guaranteed to appear. But then I have trouble discarding anything.

When I got married last year I disovered my husband had never heard of an orphan sock. When I explained that sometimes socks simply go missing, he looked at me like I was completely full of it. Everything about his look said " how disorganized does one have to be to keep losing socks? "

At first I thought " damn, his first wife was good...she never lost a sock ! ". Now I realize she was just good at discarding the orphans before he noticed.

Maybe I should have been more specific - it is not just one. The first 2 orphan socks I had mated, and the orphan socks just keep piling up in a basket! The practical part of me says - if I throw them all up - then their other 1/2's will show up.

The other sock didn't disappear....it died and was reincarnated as a wire coat hanger in your closet!:p

I just had to say, when I scanned this topic, I thought it said "Oprah sock question". LOL

I just know that all our Orphan (Oprah) Socks are somewhere together...Watching us...Mocking us...:scared:

I just found an orphan sock of DH in the trunk of my car! He'll be so thrilled. It must have fallen out of a duffle bag or something.

He only had a couple though - If I had a lot of orphan socks I might have to part with a few of them, I only have so much room in my sock drawer.

I am a firm believer that there exists a secret passage to the 4th dimension in every dryers.

That woman'll put her face on ANYTHING.;)

There are five of us and I have an entire laundry basket filled with orphan socks. :D

I do try to match them up every few weeks. DH is amazed at how many socks we have in this house. He said he doesn't understand what I do, because he wears socks, puts them both into the hamper and does not understand how one can go missing.

I can't bring myself to throw any of them away because like many of you have said, the other mate will show up. There are baby socks in the basket that still have no match and my youngest is now 3. :o

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this sock problem.:p

Sock puppets people. Lots and lots of sock puppets. :hyper: ;) ::yes::

Hellooooo Booooo Dahhhhling :wave2:

Oh and they will. ::yes:: I keep them probably forever. You never know when one just like it from the other pair is gonna get a hole. If you throw it out, then you'll need it.

Man, I swear the dryer eats those socks! Of course, most of them show up tangled in the darn fitted sheets! I usually keep them about 3 months, then the day after I toss them, a mate shows up.

Last week my DH found one of my long lost socks. It had gotten between the lining and the outer shell of one of his windbreakers. He found this lumpy thing in there and what do you know, he found my sock!

To answer the original question, we seem to keep a basket full of onlies around forever!

This is too funny because just yesterday I went out to the store and got my DS brand new socks. Last night we went through their socks and threw away all the orphans. This morning while folding some laundry before work I found a mate to one that we threw away!

Yes, I have a big bushel thing that I throw the orphans in. Then with four of us we have tons of them.

Just a few days ago I made about 20 pairs from all the orphan socks.

This is what I do: Buy ONLY the same color!!! All my socks are Nike white. If I lose one,so what!!!

airhead(always thinkin'.....)

My mom actually uses them as rags-they come in handy when cleaning something small-you can put them on like a glove and get into small areas. They tend to be good for polishing metal too...
