Orlando Smackdown: Dis vs. Uni. Ch.16 Japan Hates me, Just Hates me 7-13

As he makes the dry ice purchase, he is unsure of the amount needed so he gets 11 pounds.

This had me laughing out loud, thanks for that!
Sorry you got foiled in your quest. If I had know today I could have swung by to pick them up....

I will sacrifice myself for the good of zebra domes,,,,,you can send them to Ohio. ;-)

Carrie, your "sacrifice" is duly noted. DH predicted that there would be several TR folks who would be willing to "take one for the team". If the dry ice were still in tact, I would take you up on it! Alas, the most expensive zebra domes ever in terms of effort are in the refrigerator. :sad1:

OH NOOOOOO, are grits perishable???? I'm gonna be upset if Pkondz doesn't get his grits!!

I'm going to go with the grits are safe and sound. They aren't as conspicuous as the dry ice shipment. They may sit for 2-3 weeks in a customs hold in Canada, but at least they won't go bad. And remember, rest assured if you broke the law, at least the Feds DO have your real name and contact information unlike our Steven, eh? ;)

I'm so sorry, buzz. Who'd a thought the Canadian Government would be so afraid of perishables? :lmao:

I know it Marie! It's crazy.....I was just trying to do something nice for our dearly loved Steven. You just can't do enough for some people! :rolleyes2

It's all part of the Great Mountie Conspiracy to confiscate delicious pastry treats for themselves, eh.

Jill in CO

Yes, eh. You totally nailed it Jill! :rotfl2:

This also cracked me up. Who knew? And what's the Canadian version of the FBI, because he's probably on their list too.

I never had a zebra dome but after trying two things that Dis'ers rave about and not liking them (Dole Whip, yukky flavor (I thought it would be a tart pineapple fruity substance) and Mickey ice cream bars (chocolate was gummy, fake-tasting and just not appealing to me) I don't think I'll go out of my way to get one. I've only been to Boma once, and it was for breakfast.

We're trying one new thing on our trip to WDW next month - we've finally booked the Hoop-de-doo Revue. I'll "review" it when I get back.

Yes, sadly DH probably will never, ever be allowed to renew his passport in the future. He has been tagged. ;)

I can't wait to hear your "review" of the revue. You know how Nebo refers to Hoop de Doo? About how you would expect a seven year old to refer to it! :rotfl:

Aww Buzz, FOILED indeed!!! Good plan for recovery though... but does Nebo properly appreciate the creamy jewels that are Zebra Domes???? :rotfl:

Oh my gosh, were we ever foiled!! It was one road block after another. Poor DH with all the running around Orlando. He's a keeper for sure!!

I'm thinking it might be even better for Nebo to NOT appreciate the zebra domes as much as Pkondz. A little like sea salt in the wound, you know? ;)

This had me laughing out loud, thanks for that!
Sorry you got foiled in your quest. If I had know today I could have swung by to pick them up....

At least it was good for a few laughs!!

Marita, the zebra domes are in the refrigerator and they are yours if you want them. Just PM me if you want to stop by after work tomorrow and get them. ;)

Well, let's see if anything's happened around here in the last little bit....

Hubby and I are both CM's for 35+ years. His reaction: Over my dead body, basically......
So keep me posted what's new at the parks, I likely will never know in person

I'm sorry, but I'm thinking that 35+ years anywhere should entitle you to something awesome. A free stay seems so little in the grand scheme of Disney things.

Speaking of this Pkondz,

This Pkondz? Is he as cool as that Pkondz?

please sit back and listen to my sad, woeful tale of how I have been foiled in my attempt to send you what I wanted to send, by no less than the Canandian government. :sad2:

More on this later...

See, buzz's(you know it's bad when I'm speaking in the third person)

::yes::

current geographic location is Walt Disney World.

Wait.

Let me get this straight.

You're in Disneyworld.... and this is a tale of woe???

whoa.

After your kindness in sending out many packages of Wunderbars I wanted to do something really nice for you and your family.

Gee, thanks! I had no idea, such a small gesture was going to have this kind of effect.

I hit upon the great idea of shipping you......think hard.......Zebra domes from WDW.

OH

MY

GAWD!!!!!!!

smileyvault-cute-big-smiley-animated-029.gif

I pack a box for shipping them to you before we leave SC.

Whoa. That's pre-planning!

On Tuesday early afternoon, I drive to AKL and pick up four containers of zebra domes.

I'm sorry, I must've misheard.

Thought you said four... as in four containers.

Nah.
Couldn't be.

Could it?

Now mind you, I don't care for zebra domes at all, I don't like coffee.

Here's the weird thing.

I don't like coffee either.

But... well..... You know.

DH is now in possession of the zebra domes as he is going to purchase dry ice and take them by the Post Office for shipment.

This is getting to be a rather involved undertaking....

Apparently, not all Orlando Publix's (see the difference between Nebo type and Buzz type?)

Yes. One of you is very effusive.

DH and I are on a labor of love for you so he drives to another Publix, further away in a subsection of Orlando known as Dr. P. Phillips.

Oh, man. Do you have any idea how guilty I'm feeling right about now?

Well not as much as I will when I get to the end of your narrative....

but lots.

As he makes the dry ice purchase, he is unsure of the amount needed so he gets 11 pounds.

Well, sure. That makes sense. You want enough for the four (four!!!) packs of... I can't say it, I'll start to cry... packs of stuff. Plus you want enough to last. Plus you want enough in case you decide to ship a woolly mammoth too.

I'm sure all out of love for you, DH is now on the FBI persons of interest list.

Oddly enough... I'm okay with that.

it is determined that absolutely NO perishables may be shipped from the US to Canada as Canada will NOT accept them.

Ummmm... what?

All right, hold the phone here....
Let's check with the authorities, shall we?

hmmm.... let's see...

Products allowed into Canada from the United States

Baked goods up to 20 Kg (about 40 Lbs)

So....

Color me upset.

Obviously, this is because the Canadian goverment is scared of American cooties.

Well, that part is true.

Here I thought I might like to visit Canada one day and stop by Winnipeg to visit my old pal Pkondz. But nope, short of being The Cliffhanger on The Price is Right, or MacGyver or Bear Grylls scaling the Rockie Mountains, that's not going to happen. I'm too scared of what Canadian detainment would be like. :sad2:

It's not that bad. As long as you can get past the guards constantly apologizing for detaining you.

I think it would be much easier, and maybe less expensive, if you would just hop on a plane, fly to Orlando, drop by the WL and pick up the Zebra domes. You have until Saturday morning.

smileyvault-cute-big-smiley-animated-011.gif

Otherwise, I will just have to give YOUR zebra domes to Nebo. ;)

So then Nebo will drive up to Minneapolis and I'll drive down and an exchange will be made?

okay.

Whaddya mean he's going to eat them????

On a serious note though, seriously, while I am here, what non-perishable item might you like from the World. A shirt....what size would you like? Just let me know as soon as you can.

Do you honestly think that after all you've already done, that I'd dare (even if I could think of something) ask for something else?

Believe me, I can't believe the trouble you went to already for me. And it's very, very, very, very appreciated.

See photographic evidence below. Sadly, I think the last picture is the closest you are going to get to these zebra domes. Will licking the screen be sufficient?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSp2I0ObdW4

I can't stand it!!! Goodbye cruel world!!!!!

OH NOOOOOO, are grits perishable???? I'm gonna be upset if Pkondz doesn't get his grits!!

So I get home today and I mention to Kay that maybe today there'll be some grits in the mail.

She was really excited and wanted to get the mail, herself.

So....

Did you know (as far as I know) that the only place you can find grits up in these parts....

Would be at the pkondz household???

Yup! We got 'em today! I'm hoping to cook up a batch on Saturday. I'll keep y'all posted.

didja see that? I got grits... and I said "y'all"

It's all part of the Great Mountie Conspiracy to confiscate delicious pastry treats for themselves, eh.

:rotfl:

and. yes.

I was in high school (MHS, as a matter of fact.....) when M*A*S*H was airing new episodes, so I am quite familiar with and quite fond of Sidney Freedman.

Yes, I was interested. Pkondz, I thought of you when I saw that news about Arbus. I was saddened but instantly recovered with happy memories of the guy he portrayed on MASH.

I guess, eventually, they'll all only be around on celluloid. When Alda goes, I think I'm going to go curl up in a ball somewhere and not come out for a while.

Aww Buzz, FOILED indeed!!! Good plan for recovery though... but does Nebo properly appreciate the creamy jewels that are Zebra Domes???? :rotfl:

He better! :furious:

Thanks for the offer though

Do you think this is goods carried on your person? The smackdown came because I was shipping them to you. Believe me, what I wanted to do for a couple of crazy minutes was tell the kids...."Kids the vacation isn't over, we're going to Winnipeg, Canada to deliver some zebra domes.

And of course I'm still going to send you and your family something....I'm thinking about it as I type this and I do have some ideas. You know what happened with "The Little Blue Engine" right?

Yup! We got 'em today! I'm hoping to cook up a batch on Saturday. I'll keep y'all posted.

YES! I would drive the 1,915.2 miles to your house to see your reaction, but they would probably stop me at the border. Even though I'm "half baked", I'm a little bit over the weight limit :smokin: Don't forget the cheese......

I may have mentioned this already, but...

You may be right... dunno.

Believe me, what I wanted to do for a couple of crazy minutes was tell the kids...."Kids the vacation isn't over, we're going to Winnipeg, Canada to deliver some zebra domes.

I don't see a problem here.

Nope.
No downside.

And of course I'm still going to send you and your family something....I'm thinking about it as I type this and I do have some ideas. You know what happened with "The Little Blue Engine" right?

I needed a refresher on that, so I looked it up.

The little blue engine looked up at the hill.
His light was weak, his whistle was shrill. (Sounds like my MIL)
He was tired and small, and the hill was tall,
And his face blushed red as he softly said,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

So he started up with a chug and a strain,
And he puffed and pulled with might and main. (also like my MIL... after she's scarfed down her third helping of holopchi)
And slowly he climbed, a foot at a time,
And his engine coughed as he whispered soft,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

With a squeak and a creak and a toot and a sigh, (yup. that's her all right)
With an extra hope and an extra try,
He would not stop — now he neared the top —
And strong and proud he cried out loud,
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!”

He was almost there, when — CRASH! SMASH! BASH!
He slid down and mashed into engine hash
On the rocks below... which goes to show
If the track is tough and the hill is rough,
THINKING you can just ain’t enough!

Odd, that's not quite how I remember it, but the internet don't lie, people!

So if you really want an idea, apparently, there's a five thousand dollar castle that the Thumpers found.... oh wait... that was in Disneyland.

You really don't have to do anything.... You've done enough!!!!

YES! I would drive the 1,915.2 miles to your house to see your reaction, but they would probably stop me at the border. Even though I'm "half baked", I'm a little bit over the weight limit :smokin: Don't forget the cheese......

:lmao:

And I won't forget the cheese.... or the garlic... and I have high hopes for the bacon.

So if you really want an idea, apparently, there's a five thousand dollar castle that the Thumpers found.... oh wait... that was in Disneyland.

Apparently? Well I guess that's a good choice of words. There is a castle. Go over to our DLR TR and I'll post the pictures there. I need to keep it going. I think this one will keep going for a while.

You may be right... dunno.

See my hypothesis on this is that you, as a Canadian citizen can bring things over the border because your American cootie exposure is limited in scope. I can't send it to you because I and everything I touch, am eaten up with American cooties.

Unless of course you think there is a lucrative market in the Great White North for zebra domes. I can abandon my current job and a mule of zebra domes. We can make the name a little more intriguing and just call em ZDs. What do you think, eh? ;)

I don't see a problem here.

Nope.
No downside.

Well not for me and DH....we have passports. But the kids....I can see it now, "Kids don't worry, Uncle Pkondz said you will be safe and sound in the detainment center, just close your eyes, nose, and mouth during the delousing.

Yikes! In my haste to get to the MK this morning, I gave you the wrong title of the book. When I saw your reply, I had to post something even if, shocker, I compromised rope drop. Try "The Little Engine that Could", though your additions are hilarious!!

So if you really want an idea, apparently, there's a five thousand dollar castle that the Thumpers found.... oh wait... that was in Disneyland.

You really don't have to do anything.... You've done enough!!!!

Well, see you don't have anything in your hands. There's nothing yet for Kay to look forward to getting in the mail. But you will, my friend, you will.

I have enacted a Plan B, that while not as perfectly personal for you as the "stuff" it is a bit of WDW. Hopefully it will be enough to let you and your family know I was thinking of you in the World.

And you feel guilty? I feel terrible, because I really did want to get you your zebra domes. I was so excited to think of you receiving them. I even told the CM at The Mara where the ZDs were going.

And to be on the safe side, I'm going to mail what I do have for you on Monday morning, from my home post office. One of the employees there is best friends with my mom. I want this to get to you so I'm taking no chances. I will more than likely send it/them 2nd day, so it will be interesting to see when you get it/them.

:lmao:

And I won't forget the cheese.... or the garlic... and I have high hopes for the bacon.

Gah!!! I would love to see you tasting those grits as well!!!

Oh yeah, by the way, what do you guys think are the odds I got to meet Nebo and Smidgy? ;)

Apparently? Well I guess that's a good choice of words. There is a castle. Go over to our DLR TR and I'll post the pictures there. I need to keep it going. I think this one will keep going for a while.

Insert shameless plug here.

hmmmmm.... not sure. Only 17 Canadians have ever been to WDW, so I don't know.

But I'll buy the whole zebra dome mule. So you'll still come out ahead.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm......... zeeeeeeeebraaaaaa dooooooooommmmmmesssss.

sorry

Well not for me and DH....we have passports. But the kids....I can see it now, "Kids don't worry, Uncle Pkondz said you will be safe and sound in the detainment center, just close your eyes, nose, and mouth during the delousing.

Think of it as a second honeymoon. Sans kids.... and lots colder.

Well, see you don't have anything in your hands. There's nothing yet for Kay to look forward to getting in the mail. But you will, my friend, you will.

okay, OKAY!! You win.

Send us stuff. Lots and lots of stuff.

There. Happy?

I have enacted a Plan B, that while not as perfectly personal for you as the "stuff" it is a bit of WDW. Hopefully it will be enough to let you and your family know I was thinking of you in the World.

Now I'm curious!

And you feel guilty? I feel terrible, because I really did want to get you your zebra domes. I was so excited to think of you receiving them. I even told the CM at The Mara where the ZDs were going.

Great. So now there's a high percentage of regular Nebo and Smidgy TR readers who feel guilty.

And to be on the safe side, I'm going to mail what I do have for you on Monday morning, from my home post office. One of the employees there is best friends with my mom. I want this to get to you so I'm taking no chances.

See in Canada, you don't have to know somebody to have stuff get lost in the mail.

I will more than likely send it/them 2nd day, so it will be interesting to see when you get it/them.

I/we await it/them/those with bated/baited/held breath.

Oh yeah, by the way, what do you guys think are the odds I got to meet Nebo and Smidgy? ;)

I'm going with Bunny's odds of about 2-1. But just for variety, I'll say 3-1.

OK, so I am slow, I admit it.

But I seem to remember from many, many years ago that when shipping things to or from Germany, you would just indicate "clothes" on the declaration. Foiled them every time.

Probably too late now....

Sorry for your loss, Ponzi!

Thanks Marita. I thought of that too. Just label it candy or chocolate... but I didn't wan't Dee Dee to worry.

DH and I did think about what we would declare and "candy" or "chocolate" would have been what we would have said, but it was the dry ice that was "the fly in the ointment" so to speak. The post office FREAKED OUT over the dry ice and UPS could ship it with dry ice, but it could only be a certain weight. The maximum poundage of dry ice per UPS is somewhere between 2-3 pounds, DH purchased 11 pounds and had the box already sealed. DH had to open up the box so the UPS CSR could describe the contents and amount of ice and it was the central UPS shipping center in the southeast that gave it a "no go". :sad1:

Trust me, it's starting to really warm up here in the south. Dry ice was a must do.

I like Marita's idea about the clothes declaration. "Sir, why is the box cold? Well the shipment is going to Canada! It's so cold there they only have fake flowers!" ;)

Anyone know the connection between these three?
alice-kiss-my-grits.jpg
wayne-bridges_320.jpg

No reason, just askin'.... :rolleyes1:

Today's the day when the true north pkondz family attempts a classic southern dish; to whit, grits.

So I didn't quite read the instructions on the recipe for grits until I was ready to start making them. Oh, I had all the ingredients, I read that part, but not the directions. I mean how long can it take? 15 - 20 minutes? Here's the recipe that I used:

Preparation:
Bring water and salt to a rolling boil; (So far so good)
gradually stir in grits with fork. (easy peasy)
Cook, stirring constantly, until all water is absorbed. (ummm.... I'm pretty sure Steph said that the grits pop and fly everywhere.... So I guess I have to stir constantly while never taking the lid off???)
Stir in butter a tablespoon at a time; (awright)
stir in the beaten eggs, working quickly so eggs will not cook before thoroughly blended into the grits, (can do)
then stir in the shredded cheese, garlic and a little cayenne pepper. (sure)
Put into a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole. (why?)
Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 to 20 minutes.

(An hour and a quarter?!?!? We want these things for breakfast not a late night snack!!

Change of plans! I'm already making bacon for the grits so how's about I make us bacon and eggs for breakfast and we'll have the grits for lunch?

So that's what we did.
)

Serves 8. (Pretty sure that was a typo... left off the zero obviously. I didn't want to try halving the recipe just to be on the safe side.)

So I get the grits and start cookin'
P1010256_zps561e4862.jpg

I decide to follow the recipe and stir constantly the uncovered and apparently volatile grits. Of course I was wearing an apron and oven mitts for safety.... and a full face shield... and a fire proof hat... and steel toed boots (for when the whole thing explodes and the pot lands on my feet). Look up pyroclastic for a description of what I was expecting.

As the grits started to absorb the water, I started to wonder if I'd know when to stop.

I still don't.

I remember some of you said you like your grits a little on the... ummm... thin side? I think that's what you said.

So the grits are starting to boil and they start popping... then they start POPPING!!! Kay flees from the carnage, Piper hides under the sofa, soon my mask is covered in lava-like grits and I can't see!! The pot explodes and lands on my feet! Ha! My feet are safe! But I forgot to wear my asbestos pants! Boiling tar-like grits sprays my legs. I scream in pain and Ruby dials 911.

Or maybe I just kept stirring so the above scenario wouldn't happen.

Pick whichever story you prefer.

I know which story you'll pick. This is a bloodthirsty group after all.

I have no idea what thick vs thin grits would look like. This is what they looked like just before I took 'em off the stove.
P1010257_zps5865e65d.jpg

I read that adding finely chopped bacon was good so I did that in addition to the butter, cheese, garlic and pepper.

Here's the finished result, right out of the oven. Is this how it's supposed to look? I've got a sneaking suspicion that it wasn't cooked enough. Anyway, here it is:
P1010260_zpsd8726076.jpg

So.... that's it then. Thanks for the grits!

What?

You want to know what we thought?

I'll first tell you a little story. Growing up, my grandmother made a dish only at Christmas called Boulettes. It's basically a pork meatball wrapped in dough and cooked in gravy. Almost nobody likes it.... unless you've grown up with it... in which case... you go absolutely nuts for it.

I think that grits are like that. If you live in the south and grow up on it, you love it. We've never tried it and had no idea what it'd be like.

Kay asked me if it was like a dessert. "No, dear it has garlic and cheese and bacon. So I don't think so."
Elle asked if it was going to taste like rice. "I honestly don't know, dear."
Ruby wanted to know if it was like porridge. "I really have no idea, dear."

So I spooned some out for everybody to try.

My reaction was, "Not bad. I don't think I'd pull over if I saw a sign advertising it at a restaurant... but not bad."

I had a second helping.

Ruby's reaction was close to mine. She agreed with my "not pull over" comment, but said it wasn't bad.

Kay also said it wasn't bad. She ate most of her portion but had enough before she finished it. Here's her reaction:
P1010263_zps69e0a247.jpg

Elle was gone to her dance studio when the grits were done, but she tried 'em when she got home. She's very fussy so I was pretty sure she wouldn't like it.

I was trying not to laugh, because she thought I was playing a joke on her. "No really honey, it's good. Try it. You'll like it.... (heh, heh, heh)"

I was right. She was not a fan. I think she managed to eat a miniscule forkfull. Her expression is priceless, though:
P1010265_zpsa87a6b42.jpg

So I could've posted, "Wow! Those grits were amazing!!! Best food ever!"
But I didn't want to be dishonest. I did really appreciate your sending them up Steph, and we had a lot of fun trying out "Southern Cuisine".

Would I eat them again? Heck ya! I wanna see if I cooked those suckers enough.

I'll get another chance, I think. I want to try the recipe on the box which doesn't involve any oven time. Plus I'll cook them for the time indicated and see if that makes a difference too.

So, see? It's an adventure!

Great story, Ponzi! :lmao: Love the pics of the girls.

I have to admit, despite living in Florida for 42 years, I have never made grits, and I may have eaten them a couple of times, so I have no idea if you did it right.

On another note, my GermanDeli package arrived today with the fabulous Adler Edelcreme Herb cheese... French bread it bought, a treat will be had tonight :cheer2:

So I live in Canada and have had grits almost as often as a Floridian. Who'da thunk it!

Is the cheese the only thing you ordered?

Plus you'll have to let us know if it's everything you remember it to be.

Ponzi,

Your girls are beauties, but if those aren't two of the most classic, "Are you kidding, Dad??!!" looks, I don 't know what would be. And as for your intro question, (1) Flo, "Kiss my grits!", (2) the first appearance of Rooster Cogburn in True Grit, and (3) the more recent knock-off (unfulfilling, as no one can play John Wayne, but John Wayne). BTW - I have a cousin who named his two boys Rooster and Ethan, after John Wayne characters. And, yes, I have that kind of a family.

And as I have been otherwise engaged for a few weeks, can I have an update on the whereabouts of Smidgy and her "Old Ball and Chain"? Are they in the Happiest Place on Earth? If so, when will Mom and Dad be back (so we know how much time we have to clean up the house)?
