Orlando Mummy vs Hollywood Mummy

Well, we just got back from our two week trip to California. It's absolutely great out there.

We did the Mummy at Universal Hollywood and it is very, very different from the Orlando version. There is no mummy jumping on your car (contrary to popular opinion) and you do quite a bit of coastering going backwards! The scarab room is about the only room that is the same. We loved them both.

Disneyland was a real disappointment but California Adventure was fantastic.

Magic Mountain was also a really great, great park. Knotts Berry Farm really sucked.

Six Flags Marine World was a very good park with Medusa being a really pleasant surprise but Paramount Great America was a disappointment with their two old B&M coasters being head bangers.

The kids rode X several times at Magic Mountain. I was told by them not to do it, so I didn't:p. I did ride Goliath, Riddler's Revenge and the other coasters though and had a ball!

Insufficient Information!!!;) C'mon tell us more! I'd really like to hear more comparing the two. Is the story line similar? The launch? The treasure room? Give, Give!

Just out of curiosity, why was Disneyland so disappointing? Was this the first time you had been there?

I'm glad you enjoyed California. It sounds like you had a great trip.

Okay, here goes.

First room with screen of an Egyptologist saying that he's alive..... and then all of a sudden he is encompassed in scarabs. Then you move into the seocnd room that has skeletons and arms grabbing down through the ceiling. You move into a room similar to the "Join me" room in Orlando but instead there are no pop up guys. The next room has an animatronic Imotep that is 75% normal looking threatening you. Then you launch flat into a coaster section about the same length as the Orlando first section but without any major elements or airtime. You stop suddenly in the scarab room and then take off backwards (not a launch) down a hill and into another coaster section going backwards nearly the same duration as the first. You finish in a turntable room where you turn forwards.

There is no storyline about Brendan Fraser or being in a movie. The storyline is more related directly to the mythology.

Regarding Disneyland, we found it very, very, very cramped with rides jammed in beside each other. One day we waited 20 minutes to get into the park because there were so few wickets open. The park does not really have good theming since the rides are so jammed that any effect is lost in the crowd. The aisles are very narrow. Indiana Jones was really the only great ride. We made very good use of fast pass where we could.

We did love California Adventure. The park is much more user friendly and the atmophere is very well planned.

I think it is Disney diehards who don't feel that way. DCA really doesn't have the "Disney" feel. If you are looking for that you will be disappointed. It actually feels like a Universal park with rides that have a bit more thrill to them. It would make a great third park at Universal Orlando.:p The aisles at Disney are so narrow that you can't see the rides for the people! The rides are just plopped beside one another in no seemly order and the queues branch out into the aisles. The lines to get into the park are horrendous since they only have a few workers at the wickets. We were very disappointed at the crowd management and actual ride quality(other than Indiana Jones which was amazing).

The rides at DCA were a step above: California Screamin (an excellent launched Intamin Coaster), Tower of Terror, Grizzly Rapids Run(similar in intensity to Popeye), Soarin over California (which could use a film in high resolution instead of the one they used), Tough to be a Bug (love that 3d ride), Malibooster (similar to Dr. Doom), Muppets 4D(another 3D), Mulholland Madness (wild mouse coaster), some carnival style rides such as a ferris wheel in swing ride and a few shows and tours and restaurants. It can use with the addition of another two rides and it will be excellent. The other thing that was good was the single rider lines that are on most rides.

Wow! The California Mummy sounds VASTLY different from the one in Orlando. I wonder what made them decide to build them so differently? Certainly, it would have been much more cost efficient to construct them similarly. Then again, I guess it's all the more reason for a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood:D

Thanks for the detailed report.

Part of the reason I think is because of the size of the buildings that they were going into. The building in California was ET and the one in Orlando was Kong, so there were major height differences.

Is there a "tribute" to ET in the treasure room in CA?

We didn't see any tribute. The gift store is across the street from the ride, you don't exit into it, so I didn't spend much time in there to notice.

I'm fairly certain there is a golden ET similar to our Golden Kong.

Thanks Slacking. That's what I wanted to know. I think Damo may have misunderstood my question.

Yup, I did. I thought you meant in the gift shop.

I didn't notice an ET in the treasure room in the ride but we didn't get to ride enough times (4) to notice those things.

Well, you'll just have to go back to ride it again ;)

SO?...which Mummy ride did you like better? We just got back from our Orlando Universals stay and thought "The Mummy" was awesome!!!

I'm curious . . . What rides in particular at DL are you referring to?

The park does not really have good theming since the rides are so jammed that any effect is lost in the crowd.

Could you be more specific? Where in the park is there a lack of theming?
