Original or copies of photos?

I got around to some cleaning today in the "scary" room of the house (finally!) and found a stash of old photos. Pre-digital camera days.

Do most of you scrap your original photos? I know some people make copies and scrap those, but it seems kind of silly to have the same photos in scrapbooks and photo albums.

Also, just out of curiosity, do you prefer matte or glossy photos in your scrapbooks?

With really, really old photos of family members, (genealogy) I scan the old photo before using it in my album but I will use an old photo.

I prefer matte myself due to the glare factor.:confused3

I like glossy - matte seems a bit boring and dull to me. I use old photos, but if they're pre-1975 I use corners to mount them rathr than using adhesive direct to the photo. This also enables me to lift them out if there's something written on the back (many very old photos have Christmas greetings as people didn't take so many then)

I'd scan them just to have an additional copy of the photos, since you will never know when you may need them.

Do this for two reasons. First - just in case the photos get ruined. Second, in case you want to make ditigal scrapbooks. We're (read: I'm) going to be doing this in my family with the heritage photos since 1) my sister's basement flooded with her allotment of the photos ruined, and 2) you can make one copy of a storybook and then you can order multiple copies for whoever in the family may want them.

But as MazdaUK stated, I always use photo corners for old photos, because that way you can remove them from the album if you need to.

Good luck!

If you have the negs you might be able to get them digitalised - I wanted a copy of a few pre-digital pics, and when I went to Boots to get the negs put on a CD they had an offer "Cd for £1" so even though I wasn't getting any prints I got the full set of 24 on a CD for £1 (I think it was a mistake but I wasn't arguing  ) So instead of paying 24p each I got the disc and ordered copies onliine for 10p each :thumbsup2 As I needed more than 6 it still worked out a saving:)
