Ok I am trying to organize DD's dresser. I have 4 large drawers. How should I organize it? Sort by item: shirts, shorts, pants, jeans? Or by colors? Or functionality (dressy, play, school)? Or put outfits together (half or less of her outfits are sets) and just fill the drawers up?

What works for you?

I organize my kids clothes like I do my own. Everything has its own drawer, like all T's in one (sort sleeve on one half and long on the other) All pants in one drawer, all pj's in one, etc. They all put away their own laundry and my boys stick to this method. My dd's drawers are a mess, when she has a pile of laundry to put away she usually just throws it in any drawer, so I've given up on organizing her drawers for her
When she was little and had sets, they were hung up in her closet, I have always just kept seperates in the dresser drawers.

HaHa that's funny. I have that problem with my sons' dressers too. I'm still working on it so I'm probably bad to give advice, but I'll tell you what I'm doing right now.

I do PJ's and socks and underwear in one drawer. (I'd like to do socks/underwear in a seperate drawer, but it's just a space issue and the PJ drawer is my biggest one).

I do pants/shorts in one drawer. I then do shirts in another drawer.

I like to hang hoodies and nice dress clothes in the closet.

Good Luck!

When I was still in charge of the kids' dressers I would put clothes in drawers by what they were-shirts in one, pants in another, etc. Now the kids do their own and 2 of the 3 shove clothes in whatever drawer they happen to fit in and the 3rd still has his organized by what they are-shirts in one, pants in another, etc.

Well, now they are a mess because I no longer put their clothes away for them, and I feel certain they don't put them away where they belong.

When I did do that for them though, it was shirts on top, shorts/skorts in the middle, and pjs, undies, and swimsuits on the bottom. I also roll as many things as a can (instead of folding). It alllows my girls to see more of their shirts, etc, so they wear different ones. When I folded, only the item on top got worn. This also allowed me to keep the amount of clothes in check. If I could fit all the shirts in the drawer without covering one up, it was time to get rid of one.

Even though my youngest's room is fairly large, we keep all his clothes in his closet to maximize his room space. In the closet (which is not very deep, but fairly wide), we have nice, large, sturdy, stackable bins. His socks, undershirts, and underwear are in the top bin, foldable shirts in the first bin (we hang up a lot), sweaters and hoodies in the second bin, sweat pants and sport pants in the third bin, and pajamas and play clothes in the fourth/bottom bin. The rest is hung up.

My oldest's (16) dresser is also in his closet, though he has a traditional dresser. His room is designed/decorated in kind of a Zen theme, so he likes minimal furniture in there. He just has his bed, nightstand, wall shelves, and desk. I have no idea how he arranges his clothes (if he does!) in his dresser. Since he never wears sweats or sports pants, most of his clothes are hung up, but I do fold his undershirts, socks, underwear, tshirts, and sweaters/crewneck knits. He hangs his hoodies, jeans, and, of course, his khakis, polos, and button downs.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I actually only had 3 drawers because I forgot her shoes are in one. I put shirts in one, pants and jeans in another, and skirts, capris, and shorts in the third. I hung up her hoodie outfits and dresses.

Good idea about rolling the clothes. It sure would make it easier to see the shirts.

We are going to be moving her in a few months because she is getting a new room and the baby is getting hers. So this all may change again soon.

Thanks!

We keep school clothes/dressy clothes in the closet.

In the dresser, we have:

Top drawer: undies, socks & camis (with dividers between them)
Middle drawer: t-shirts and sweats/leggings
Bottom drawer: PJs (my DD has WAY to many PJS!)

We have 5 drawers.

All tops, dresses and hoodies etc are hung.

Top Drawer PJ's
2nd Drawer skirts, diaper covers from dresses, shorts, capris
3rd Drawer pants and leggings
4th Drawer socks, tights and other accessories (hats)
5th Drawer is a hodge podge...extra sheet, winter gear, hooded towels...stuff like that.

when DS was little I hung everything in the closet except undies, socks and pj's. He used to like to keep his coloring books, picture books and toys in the bottom drawers.

You're funny today, you must be in "nesting" mode! :rotfl:

My "kids" are 24, 20, and 16 and I have to tell you I never DID find a good way to organize their drawers! You probably have year-round clothes where you are, but here when the seasons changed we would change everything out and I don't think I ever did the same thing twice. I do remember that I always had to sacrifice one drawer for their "stuff"....all their prized possessions (i.e. junk!) so it made fitting everything into the remaining drawers a challenge. I know with one daughter we used one of those rolling plastic carts with three drawers and kept it in her closet. She kept all her jammies and socks and underwear in those, so that freed up the dresser for shirts, jeans, shorts, etc.

Now of course I don't have anything to do with the laundry of the two who are still home. DD does all her laundry at school and I wouldn't even try to see how DS organizes (or doesn't!) his pile of clothes. All I ask is that they are off the floor and out of sight! :sad2:;)

DD's dresser has 3 large drawer and 1 smaller.

The smallest has undies/socks.

1 has jeans / pants not for school

1 has jammies and dance clothes.....actually dance clothes are EVERYWHERE...she has ALOT of dance clothes

1 has school bottoms....pants/skorts/etc....she wears uniforms to school.

All shirts, jackets, dresses, and skirts are hung in the closet.
Shoes are on the bottom of the closet.

DS's dresser is similiar....without all of the dance clothes, ofcourse.

I separate like this: underwear/socks (DS pjs), jeans, sweats, better shirts, casual shirts.

I keep larger sweatshirts, sweaters, coats, shoes in closets.

Each of my kids has underbed storage that I keep all summer stuff (year round) and my DD keeps her pajamas and some dressy clothes there as well (as she has two large underbed drawers, DS has one extra large - those are great, btw).

As they've grown and clothes have gotten bigger, it's become more of a challenge. I try not to buy as much as I used to, have learned what doesn't get worn and have had some issues with sizes (DD skipped a whole size this summer so things I'd bought her for fall didn't fit :headache: ), etc.

My DDs' clothes are put away by set. I even fold them this way, so when they put away their clothes, they are already in a set, so no mess in the dresser. :thumbsup2 I also buy their clothes in sets for this reason. Call me a little OCD.

However, when DS was still at home, he just wore jeans and shirts, so no sets. :)

Olay first I hang all outfits (matched together) on hangers. Makes getting dressed easy.

Then for the dresser.

Top drawer - undershirts/panties/socks/pantyhose
Next drawer -pjs/swim stuff
Next drawer- short sleeve and long sleeve shirt odd balls
Last drawer - shorts and long pants odd balls.
Last

Top drawer: underwear, socks, undershirts, belts
2nd drawer: pj's, sweat pants, sleeping t-shirts
3rd drawer: shirts
4th drawer: jeans/pants

I pack away the off-season clothes in Rubbermaid bins.

My DS has an extra dresser with three drawers, so in those, he keeps his hoodies, and sweaters.

My oldest DS has four drawers and a closet, and all of his hoodies are on the closet floor. Teenagers...:rolleyes1

I hang all of the pants and shirts.

In the dresser:
Drawer #1 - socks
Drawer #2 - underwear and under shirts
Drawer #3 - bathing suits, gloves, and misc. things
Drawers #4 - Pajamas

I would do:

socks, tights, underwear in one drawer...

pants in another,

shirts in another,

and jammies in the last one.

However, in reality, DD has TONS of pants. So, her pants take up two drawers and I hang all of her shirts up in the closet.

Have fun organizing!

I have 4 large drawers as well. Here is what works for me:

Top drawer #1 - socks/underwear/tights/ballet leotards
Middle drawer #2 - Shirts/sweaters
Middle drawer #3 - Pants and skirts
Bottom drawer #4 - pjs and night gowns
