I agree with a lot of the advice you have gotten. Especially decluttering, checking out pinterest, and really looking at closets (most closets are not designed to get the best use out of them - typically one hanging bar and a shelf - you can do much better with a little creativity).
I'll focus on some long-term advice. Look at your furniture... is it taking up more space than necessary? is it really what you need? As replacements become necessary or affordable, look into pieces that take less square footage, have hidden storage, or make use of the height in a room. Use an upholstered storage bench for a coffee table - hidden storage, extra seating, and a footrest all in one. Replace a low bookshelf with a tall one, or replace a buffet table with a china hutch.
And be careful: Make sure they will actually hold the items you want. Double check measurements before you buy.
I made a ton of furniture mistakes over the last 20 years. Sometimes because I saw something pretty and bought without thinking about how it would fit in with other furniture/windows/doors or how it would affect walkways. Sometimes I "needed" something, a table/chair/bed, and didn't want to do without for the time it would take to find the "right" piece, so I just took the first decent choice I could find (The internet has certainly helped with that problem).
To make a long post short: be thoughtful about your space and how you can best use it.
