Ordering Magic bands

Does anyone know more about "Starting in 2021, we plan to unveil an innovative new offering as part of the My Disney Experience app that will bring features of a MagicBand to your smart devices."? Wondering if I should purchase magic bands for our June trip, or wait a bit and see if there will be an alternative added to the MDE app...

I suspect they will be implementing something fairly soon since my May 2022 trip doesn't allow me to add a MagicBand and shows me a "card" instead.

If they are now possibly making some money off of magic bands I don’t see them going away any time soon. I’ve been reading a lot of reports (even on this thread) that there is some sort of glitch happening that prevents people from seeing the band ordering option in their account.
Some have had to call IT and others reported the issue correcting itself.
We have family also going in May 2022 and they have ordered their bands as usual.

Disney no longer includes these. Any band you have from previous trip can be used. I have heard the standard one color bands can be purchased from Disney for $5 or pay more, up to $30+ for special designs. Or use phone app. I believe you can order them with the My Disney Experience app. Need the app anyway these days for almost anything at WDW.

you can order a magic band from MDE as usual, (paying $5 for a solid color) or upon arrival at your resort get a “key to the world” card that will be you room key and park ticket. The app will only open your door, not act as your ticket.

Not yet. That functionality is coming, but no word on when.
