Orange or grapefruit - front or back

My son is here for a conference and has a day off - offered to help in the garden. It's hard for me to dig and even harder to lug big bags of compost - and they don't come smaller. Yes i know i should be composting but I really don't have a space or much to compost that isn't weeds. DH wants a fruit tree in the backyard where there really isn't too much room for a big tree. He doesn't care what kind. I have already planted a lemon which bears fruit that the stupid lawn mower guy invariably manages to knock off the tree. It isn't growing much however. I want to plant a tree in the front to screen off the neighbors. DH protests saying that people will steal the fruit. I don't care if they do. Maybe along the side now that I think of it.

What do you think? I can't believe it is worth worrying about if someone takes a couple of pieces of fruit.

I agree, it's not worth worrying about. I enjoy my fruit trees for the flowers and seeing the fruit grow. We rarely get much fruit off of them between the squirrels, birds and neighbor kids.

My husband worries about stuff like that too. I wanted to plant grapes along a chain link fence that we have, and he thought that they would get stolen. ::shrug:: Must be a guy thing.

I would plant an orange tree, I *love* the smell of orange blossoms.

You live where the climate is kind to orange trees, I would plant one. I love the fragrance of orange blossoms too

My sister has peach trees-lots of them and she has a real problem with people picking them when she's not home. My screwy neighbor picked all of my basil!?
Go ahead and plant. Just don't leave a ladder out there which she did once. They used it to clean her out.

My sister was roundly scolded by some old man when she asked him not to take ALL the limes from her tree. He was furious with her.
