Orange Hair from Shower Water? Anyone else? :D

Ok, this is a silly-serious post, but honestly wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Never happened to me before, so I'm wondering if there's a recent change in CA water I'm unaware of...??

Stayed at The Grand Californian last month with family friends. My best friend and I have hair extensions. They are expensive (she's a stylist and gets them at cost, which is the ONLY reason I have them) and not the pin in kind. They slowly turned from blonde to a neon rust orange color while we were there and showering in the hotel water. We had fantastic OMBRE hair by the end of the trip!:rotfl2:Very classy!! LOL

I know it wasn't only The Grand Californian water either (they are going through construction) because my friend spent the last half of her trip in Newport Beach. And we compared locks when we both got home. They were the same color.

Looks like it was a high concentration of iron deposits in the water. We were able to remove it from the hair with hard water shampoos, extra. However, my toothbrush and DH toothbrush are still stained orange...:crazy2:

Anyone have info on this? Been traveling to Disneyland 2-3 times a year for the last 5 years. Never had this happen before! Thoughts?:confused3

I lived in southern California for many years but I've never heard of anything like that.

Were the extensions treated with dyes or chemicals like blonde hair? GCH could have hard water. But it could also be, washing more often than usual, chlorine, or sun exposure as well.

I know! It was SO bizarre. Like I said, been traveling regularly for years with no issues. Going next week, so just wondering if I needed to pack some hard water shampoo! LOL Or (fingers crossed) if whatever was flowing through the water had passed...

No, no unusual treatments to the hair. It's sold all over CA too, so I would imagine it would have a reputation of ruining ones vacay if it turned orange depending on water, chlorine, sun, easily. ;)

I swear if no one has any experiences like this one I'm going to check DH and DH's Best-y phones to see if we're on some horrible "punk'd" episode!!:rotfl2:

Blonde hair that has been dyed does the same thing, so if the extensions were dyed with the same process, it would happen. Basically the cooler tones are stripped by sun and chlorine faster than water alone. Were you also using a different shampoo? It has nothing to do with the price or availability of the extensions, but the toner used in the dying process and either something in the water or other conditions (sun or chemicals) that made them turn brassy faster than usual.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I was looking at pictures of costumes from years past to get a general idea of costumes and think I recognize the little guy in your avatar! lol Did you go as Lady, Tramp, and Scamp one Halloween at Disneyland? I saw this picture at http://www.sippycupmom.com/5-disney-costumes-wear-mickeys-scary-halloween-party/. The reason I remember it was because it was such a cute and clever family costume! :goodvibes

Yep! That was us:D During a Halloween party, while waiting for a picture in front of the awesome Mickey Pumpkin on Main Street, someone from Disney asked if they could take our picture. We had to sign waivers, etc. They said it would be up on their blog for Halloween. Cool, right? Never guessed I'd find that picture years later on Pinterest, other blogs, etc...LOL It was my son's first (and favorite) Disney movie. So that's what prompted the family costume choice. To this day, spaghetti dinner night in our house is referred to as "Lady and the Tramp" dinner. ;)

Thanks for the shout out.:thumbsup2 My 15 minutes, right?:lmao:

Thank you! Good to know! I'm new at the whole extensions thing. But I've dyed my blonde hair a lighter shade for years and never had a problem like that before with water...? No new shampoo either? But I'm sure you're right and it was several factors that resulted in the color change. It was a sight, I'll tell you. This time I'm packing a shell covered headband and will just go full Ariel, if necessary... ;)

Orange toothbrushes? Never heard of that one! So glad you got it off your hair though! I have a friend who just had her hair done like that- sheesh $$$! I choked when she told me how much it cost!

I agree on the $$$! I couldn't believe it when my best friend told me how much they usually cost to buy and maintain. I get to buy them at cost (through her) and then she puts them in for free, otherwise NO WAY. I'd rather have a trip to Disneyland!! :donald:
