Optical illusion (or for some, optical delusion)

Square "A" and square "B" are the exact same shade of gray.

that is one amazing illusion! I didn't believe it until I brought it into one of my graphics programs and compared them; they really are the same!

That is so weird. They are the same shade (as my photoshop tells me) but how? It must be some strange sensory thing. Very strange.

Using Photoshop color picker you can see that the picker shows the exact same amounts of red blue and green (107) for "A" and "B".

I wonder if the green cylinder weren't there if it would be the same. Must be something with the shadows/brightness of the square.

If anyone is having a hard time believing this, try the following (for Windows users):

1) Right click on the image and select Copy Image
2) Go to your start button, select Run, and enter MSPAINT
3) When you are in Paint, type Ctrl+V to paste the image
4) There is bunch of boxes representing "tools" on the left of the screen. Click on the one in the upper right - which looks like a dotted rectangel
5) Now outline a little square in the A block, and drag it into the white part of the margin
6) Do the same for a piece of th B block
7) Yep, same color

Yep it's the same shade but for some reason when I drag it around it DOES change shade (to the eye) when it goes behind the cylinder. Not sure why a shadow would make something appear lighter.
