I recently started receiving spam text messages on my cell. Is there a way to opt out on these like I did on my regular phone? It wouldn't be so bad, but I was charged for the incoming text messages.

heres some info I recieved via email which may be the answer and hopefully the solution to your spamming:

all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS.... :sad2:

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone:

1-888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list.
It blocks your number for five (5) years.

Hope it helps!! :Pinkbounc

Sorry, this is an Urban Legent. Snopes link

Despite dire warnings about the imminent release of cell phone numbers to telemarketers that continue to be circulated via e-mail year after year, no such thing is about to occur,
nor do cell phone users have to register their cell phone numbers with the national Do Not Call registry before a soon-to-pass deadline to head off an onslaught of telemarketing calls. The panic-inducing e-mails (which circulate especially widely every January or June, since many versions of the warning list the end of those months as a cut-off date for registering cell phone numbers with the national Do Not Call registry) have grown out of a misunderstanding about the proposed creation of a wireless directory assistance service.

OP, call your provider. They can turn off in-comming text messages. If you do want to receive some they may be able to block a number.

I get charged $.02 daily for a text message I don't want. Verizon told me how to stop it - din't work.

They told me how to block it - didn't work.

Verizon says they can't stop it or stop charging me for it, because the company says I agreed to it (I didn't), so it is out of their hands.

Verizon also says they can't tell me the name of the company.

The only way I figured out to save myself the $7.20/yr. was to let the text message box fill up, so they can't get it through. But then they try to send it through 1-2 times an hour, which is annoying in itself.

I'm actually dropping Verizon in August over this, I'm so perturbed by their inaction.

Let me know if you get something figured out with your phone company. Please. :)

Cell phone numbers are restricted from almost all telemarketing, even if they aren't on the National Do Not Call file. That email has been going around for a little while but you can get the facts here http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp

Not sure how to stop them since they shouldn't be sending them. I'd call your provider and see what you can do about getting them blocked. They certainly shouldn't be charging you for spam.

I just heard complaints about this from 3 different people (all with different providers too) they are definitely spam, I got to read some of them. I can't believe there sn't some way to block them like you can block spam on the internet.

I wouldn't even care about the spam (although it is inconvenient). It is the $.02 daily charge.

It isn't the principle of the matter, it's the money!

:)

I have Cingular and I had text messaging taken off my dd's phone. Back when it was still AT&T, you could receive them for free, but you were charged for the ones you sent. Since Cingular took over, you are charged .10 for every incoming and outgoing message. It really ticked me off. I'd like my dd to have the option of texting me in case of an emergency, but I have no control over her friends sending her 100's of messages, so I had to have the text messaging blocked from her phone. All you have to do is call and ask.

We also have Cingular and blocked texting from all our phones as well.

I have Verizon and they told me although the cant block a certain number they can take texting off my phone all together. Thankfully the spam texting has stopped.

My friend had to turn it off her sons phone after a $300.00 bill because his freinds kept texting. Boy those charges add up.

Deanna :bored: :cat:

Try repling to the message with remove. That is what I did with one time

the company says I agreed to it (I didn't)
They don't enable any service until you sign the service agreement. The service agreement is often so long, and refers to other information which you have to go look-up yourself, that almost no one can say with assurance that they read and know everything that they've agreed to.

I have T-Mobile and this is exactly what is happening to me. I will call T-Mobile on Monday and see if I can block text messaging.
