Love her or hate her, the women gives away some great gifts.

The women is giving away the freakin store.
so far
diamond watch
nikon camera
tory burch shoes and bags
cashmere ralph lauren sweater and wrap.
diamond gold Judith Ripa earrings

and it's only 15 mins into the show.

I am watching right now. I've never seen so many men excited to get 18 different candles or a pinkish cashmere sweater. I'm trying to imagine my husband's reaction at getting 18 candles.:rotfl:

It's the 5 year membership in netflix with the Sony 3D flat screen 52 inch Bravia tv that is making him weep.

All I can think now is the amount of tax they will have to pay on this stuff come tax season. I hope those people can afford it. I understand that the audience was chosen for actually doing good deeds.

Historically, she has paid the taxes for these winners. :thumbsup2

She came to Ft. Campbell, KY in 2004 for the "world's biggest baby shower." I know several people that went and they paid almost 4k in taxes for the goodies. A few of those people actually ended up selling some of the things to help offset the costs of the taxes.

Ouch!

I read that all the items are donated from the manufacturer for the "free" advertising. You all know if O mentions a product it is sold out the next day. They will reap way more in revenue than the cost of donating all those gifts to the audience. Although it is not really Oprah giving it away as she is not paying for it, it is the connection she has with these products that makes it all possible, so she is responsible for them being able to get it all.

She addressed the taxes issue in her season opener when she gave away the trip to Australia. SHE picked up the taxes for that. I'm pretty sure these things are given away now by the manufacturer - no taxes. I would be one excited man to be there! When I saw that cruise ship pop out of a box LOL - said some not so disboards words..

This is probably a really stupid question, but I don't understand this thing about someone paying the taxes for someone else.

If someone gives you something and you owe taxes on it. How can another person pay the tax? Isn't that a gift as well? Shouldn't there be some type of tax on that amount?

I guess my brain isn't working well tonight, but I just don't get it.

I have to say that that cruise ship has to be one of the ugliest things I have ever seen. I am biased but I just don't see the point of needing a skating rink on a boat in the middle of the ocean. I would never go on a cruise, not even a Disney one. I'm sure people love it though so I hope they have a great time. They got quite the haul today.

I love watching Oprah's Favorite Things just for the people's reactions. People cry, hug strangers, kneel on the ground and praise God. And then there's always the one guy in the audience who has no idea what is going on and has this, "Help me. I'm scared," look on his face." :)

My favorite this year -- the lady who mouthed, "I'm going to drop dead right now."

*sigh* I'll miss that next year...

True gifts aren't taxable to the recipient at all. I'm not sure what Oprah's giveaways are considered for tax purposes. But if it's wages or prize winnings, both are taxable and yes, if the giver also pays the recipients income tax on it, that payment is also taxable income to the recipient.

I used to do tax work for companies that did this for employees working overseas and receiving additional pay for increased cost of living. Say the employee was to receive $10,000 for his rent while on foreign assignment, and was in a 30% tax bracket. They couldn't give him $13,000 (10K + tax on 10K), because now he'd be taxed on the extra 3K. So we'd divide the 10K by 70% to get to the number needed to pay him ($14,286), so that he would net 10K after paying 30% on the whole thing.

Sorry, that was probably way more info than you wanted! I'm such a tax nerd, can't stop these fingers once they start going! ;)

I think the men are crying over the candles & sweaters, because they know they finally have a nice gift to give to a woman that won't land them in the dog house this year. :thumbsup2 They might even get rewarded for their gifts. :rolleyes1 ;)

That must have been before the show when she gave everyone a car. She got thoroughly bashed because the audience was a special audience full of school teachers. She was rewarding them for doing great work, while being so underpaid. Then they had to pay the taxes on the car. Many of them couldn't afford it.

Personally, I have always thought some of the stuff she gives, while fabulous, I would be grateful, yet turn around and sell some of it. I would sell the car for a less expensive one and use the rest of the money for something else.

This season, I'd sell the earrings. (I don't have pierced ears.) The Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater, because although she claims that shade looks great on everyone, it's too brown and any brown or tan shade makes me look dreadful.

I'd also sell these:
Flannel Tory Tote ($250) and Reva Ballerina Flat ($195) by Tory Burch
Oprah hair stylist Andre Walker’s shampoo and hair kit ($65)
Lafco House candle set ($55 each)
Breville panini press from Williams-Sonoma ($100)
Kyocera ceramic knife ($75)
Baker’s Edge brownie and lasangne pans/Ghiradelli brownie mix
“Decoded” by Jay-Z

And, believe it or not, I'd sell the cruise tickets. Did people not see the news report last week of that cruise that was stuck out at sea with no food? No WAY would I want to be stuck on a ship. I thought being stuck on one where everyone got the flu or diarrhea and passed it around was bad. But that cruise was way worse. :scared1:

I have to say that that cruise ship has to be one of the ugliest things I have ever seen.

Well, you don't see the outside of it once you are on it. ;)

I can't wait to see what she gives for Day two. :hyper:

Her Monday show will likely focus on families 100K in debt from buying expensive gifts they couldn't afford.

No, that was very helpful. I've always wondered about this. When people say that the recipients don't have to worry because the giver is also paying the tax, it has always been very confusing to me. It just seemed that, somehow, the recipient is going to have to pay some tax!

The Titanic had problems on it's maiden voyage. :rolleyes1

The kinks have to be worked out of a new ship somehow. Being "stuck" on an enclosed ship isn't my thing. :crazy2:

oh my.....
I love Tory Burch too...

Now I know who I would have sold the Tory Burch stuff to. :teeth: ;)
