Hi everyone! DH and I have decided to get a home video game system for our kids for Christmas, but we can't seem to agree on which one. XBox, PlayStation2, or Nintendo? What would you recommend and why? In your experience, what are the pros/cons with each system? From what I understand (after doing a little research on the web), XBox has more games for older kids, less for little ones compared to PS2. (Our kids are DD14, DD9, and DS18 months. Obviously, DS won't be playing, so we are more interested in "girl" games like Dance, Dance, Revolution). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!!

Can't play the Dance Revolution type games on Nintendo. Other than that we chose Nintendo because we felt it had more "kid friendly" games. They don't have the really violent ones.

I asked my kids what was the most popular game system and they said PS2. So, that's what I bought. I figured they could share with other kids that way.

Well I would go XBOX360 or PS3. Both have NEW gaming systems coming out.

My 14yodd loves the Playstation and has no interest in the Gamecube. It really is for young kids and kids at heart like ME!

When it comes down to it it is between the 9 & 14yodd's (which I have as well).

9yodd plays Nintendo and DD14 will play PS2. Lately however she sticks with her computer and is getting "World of Warcraft" for Christmas (PC online gaming).

But we also have XBOX and I play all 3.

This post probably doesn't help you much...sorry!:rotfl:

We have Nintendo Gamecube mainly because it was the cheapest (and also seemed to have more "kid" games"). I recently saw a Dance Dance Revolution, Mario version that is supposed to be coming out, and I assume it will be for the Gamecube since Mario is a Nintendo character. We will probably buy that game!!!

I'd have to go with the PS. DS has X-Box and loves it, but PS definitely has more age appropriate games to choose from--and you can play DVDs on it!

I seen someone recommended the Xbox 360 and while I personally feel it's the best choice for my family (we have all the others), chances are, you won't be able to get your hands on one before this holiday season. If you do, you will have to go thru GREAT pain in order to get one, or over pay on eBay for it. Xbox just can't get enough out to meet demand before the holiday season.

I would have suggested an Xbox if you had an older son. Xbox is an awesome system, but it's mainly for 1st or 3rd person shooters and there are a few RPGs out now for it that get really good reviews, but I've yet to see a girl like either of them. Of course, your daughters may be different? IMO, Xbox should be your last choice.

I think there are more games on the PS2 than any other system. However, more doesn't always mean better. We own all three systems and we have the least amount of games on the PS2. I will say though, if a game is available on several platforms, I usually always buy it for the Xbox 1st because the others don't touch the system for graphics.

While someone has already mentioned that Dance, Dance Revolution is not available for the Gamecube, IMO, this is still going to be your best bet, UNLESS your older daughter likes games that most other teen girls do not. I think at times a lot of the other systems put games out there and just forget totally about the fun factor. This is one area that Nintendo shines and always has, IMO. Get them Animal Crossing and you won't hear from them for days!! It's an incredible game and I think mostly any girl would enjoy playing it. There are tons of other good ones for the system too.

I'd highly recommend you visit some online sites though and get a feel for what each system has to offer.

A few pluses here:
Xbox:
Able to plug 4 controllers in out of the box.
Awesome graphics that are better than the others.
Surround sound options and high definition.
Lots of shooter games for it and you can only play Halo on the system.
Built in hard drive so no need to buy memory cards to save games.
Can burn music to the hard drive and use that music in your games.
Has a modem so all you need is an ethernet cable (if you've got DSL or Cable internet) and a Live starter kit to go Xbox Live.

PS2:
While not a plus for many, Rockstar really supports the PS2 and you get all the GTA games 1st.
LOTS of Japanese style RPGs. Xbox gets little support here, so if you really like these types of games, this is definitely your system.
Ability to go live and it's free, but there are additional purchases you must buy 1st.
Excellent selection of games

Gamecube:
It's hard to beat Nintendo for a fun game and they develop some awesome games that you'll not get on any other system.
The $30 - $35 Wavebird (wireless controller) is tops in the field. No other wireless controller begins to come close and it's the price of a regular Xbox controller.
Cheaper price for system, BUT, Nintendo is reluctant to lower games as fast as they're lowered for the other systems.
Pretty awesome graphics for the games we have, but I attribute that more to a lot of their games being cartooney.

I'm sure there is more, but that's all I can think of right now. Good luck no matter what you decide

Well, we have all three but also have sons. By far, they play XBOX the most probably because of the LIVE aspect but they love shooting games and pro-sports games which is probably not what girls would play. I'll also mention that for whatever reason, we've not had terrific luck with the PS2. We have purchased 2 and now the kids report the second one is acting up. The guys in the video shop tell me that this is not uncommon with PS2. We will replace it when PS3 comes out but I think I've read that is Mar or April. Since PS3 is imminent, I wouldn't recommend buying PS2 now. BTW, DDR is available for XBox which I've tried (for exercise - yikes, it is HARD!). Gamecube is convenient because it is small and portable. The kids hook it up in the van with the DVD player and play as we travel.

Just a quick "Thank You" to everyone for all the info!!

We have PS2 and XBox and while the kids prefer XBox, there just aren't that many games out there that they can play, my kids are similar ages to your kids. They both play DVD's but I guess you have to have a special remote for the XBox to play the DVD's, PS2 you can use a game controller to run the DVD's. With Xbox360 or what ever it is called coming out I don't expect the game situation to get any better.

Well we got them all, Playstation, PS2, Xbox, Nintendo 64, gameboy, etc.
And they like them all, they play the PS2 and Xbox the most.

Well.....we just went through this same dilemma. We have a DS8, DD10 and decided aftermuch research to go withthe gamecube. Why? Very, very few violent, mature or teen rated games. We consulted to seperate electronic guys and both said the gamecube is the only one they would purchase or had purchased for their children. Now one said he did have an xbox but that was for his gaming pleasure and was a kids off toy for him.... :rotfl2: Proof again that men are just boys in bigger bodies!

HTH

Besides nintendo has all the wonderful mario bros. games, etc. Very family friendly.

For your girls I would reccomend the Nintendo Game Cube (My personal preference). It has lots of family friendly games. I highly reccomened Animal Crossing, Mario Party & Harvest Moon for them!

You would probably do alright with the Playstaion as well.

However, I don't recommend the Xbox. Most of their games are for boys and focused mainly on sports or violence.

Look at the games you think they want to play, and let that determine what system to buy.

We went thru this last Christmas and ended up with Gamecube because it had more kid friendly... my brothers have XBOX and said it would be over there heads.

My kids are younger than yours 3,5,8. With the age difference I may be tempted to get PS2.
