Opinions on Gateway laptops

We are looking at buying a laptop and have found a good deal on a Gateway at Costco. Specs wise, we feel it has everything we want.

My dh has heard from a couple of people that Gateways don't hold up well. We aren't the kind of people that replace our computers every two years, so long term hold up is something we are looking for.

Anyone have opinions on Gateways?

I don't know about their laptops, but we have a 10 YO Gateway desktop that is still plugging away. We had to replace the monitor after 6 years, but other than that it's been great.

I just got a Gateway Netbook for my birthday, and it's held up well for the last 6 days. ;)

This month's (or last month's) Consumer Reports reviews computers. They rank some Gateways very high, but their customer service very low. What model or models? I have the magazine handy.

DS15 has a Gateway NV52 laptop. Six months after we bought it, it died....would not turn on. We also found a lot of reviews on the internet of people who experienced the same issue with that model after it happened to us. Since it was still under warranty, Gateway did repair it.

I wasn't happy with their customer service. It took a long time to get the info needed to send it to be repaired and follow-up communication was poor. Actual turn time to fix wasn't too bad....took about two weeks.

We will not buy another Gateway laptop.

Thanks.

It's a Gatway NV59C09u

Gateway is on my "will never buy from list" (along with Dell). I know people who worked for them and have heard too many horror stories about their systems and their customer service.

HP is on my "might buy from, but will research very very closely to be sure they are not trying to sell me a system that isn't speced to run well" (had an issue with them trying to sell me a desktop where the power source didn't meet required Nvidia specs for the video card in it).

Wow, us too - our Gateway was a 1999 and we replaced the monitor about 3 years ago. We just unplugged it and put it away a few weeks ago as we got a MAC laptop around the Holidays. I tried to upgrade it a few times but it was running really slow and for a computer it became outdated. We got our money's worth. I didn't know they made laptops.

I've had this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113042

for about 3 years now. I had to replace one of the hard drives earlier this year. It had a WD green in it, I replaced with a WD caviar black.

My only issue(s) with it are the labelflash technology. It's impossible to find these discs in the US. My other issue is really a "me" thing and not the pc, I have the capability to use 64 bit, seems odd to make a pc and load it/give it the ability to use it right away. It's an additional expense. But that's just me.

I would buy another, haven't really had an issue with this except for the hard drive.

I bought a Gateway laptop from Best Buy 6 years ago and it has done very well. DH added more memory to it, and it has held up great.

On another note, we bought HP laptops for the kids for Christmas and another in February for anothers birthday. The Feb one is currently on its way back to HP as it will not turn on. (3 months old)

One of the other Hp's we had to replace the mouse on it as the button kept sticking. We just bought one of those remote mouse for about $30 at Best Buy and that fixed that problem!
