Opinions needed

We have a tendency to return to the same restaraunts, but wanted to try some new places this trip. For the following places what is your opinion and what would you order?

L Tempanyaki
D Chef's de France
B Konas
D Spoodles
D Cape May (buffet I know, but what's good and what do clams taste like?)


We are also going to Sci Fi, Mama Melrose, Rose & Crown, Chef Mickey's, San Angel Inn, Marrakesh, Hoop de Doo, Rainforest Cafe, 'Ohannas, and Donald's but have been to these before, so are familiar with them.

Teppanyaki. Personally, I'd not go out of my way to visit this restaurant. It isn't unique enough to warrant going out of your box for. You can probably find a better restaurant in this genre in Texas. Have you tried Biergarten or Coral Reef yet?

Chefs de France. This is my favorite Epcot restaurant. Start with escargots. Butter, garlic, yum! The menu changes frequently. On the most recent menu, I'd aim for maybe the lamb shank. It's not something you can get everywhere else, and that's what I typically look for there for dinner.

Konas. I have no strong opinions about this place. I'll leave it for others. (That's not to say I'd recommend you find another choice, though.)

Spoodles. Another favorite. Again, the menu changes often here, and I'd aim for something unique, rather than "yet another steak". In this case, the Portuguese Seafood Stew would be my choice.

Cape May. Don't go here for the shellfish and seafood. As a matter of fact, as a fervant seafood lover, when I'm forced to eat here (by guests or friends who make the decision), I focus on the "American" side of the buffet, exclusively. The quality just isn't there. It's basic buffet quality, which is just not good enough for shellfish and seafood. If you really want shellfish or seafood, go somewhere else. This might be a good time to hop into Epcot to check out Coral Reef.

I'm afraid there are not any Japanese restaraunts around here, so we wanted to just try it. Yes, we have been to both Coral Reef and Biergarten. I took my mom to Coral Reef last Sept and unfortunately had a very snotty waiter who got huffy when we wouldn't order alcohol. I feel I'm jinxed at the Biergarten. I've been three times and had a bad time all three times. May '05 I was traveling solo and got stuck as the only female at a table with seven men, Sept '05 had a couple from Rhode Island sitting with us and the woman was very irate that she had to share a table with us and two other couples. She made it uncomfortable for all of us with her constant complaining and her husband telling her to shut up. Dec '05 the waitress tripped and dumped the beer of the guy next to me all over me. I agree the food is pretty good and I love the show, but am afraid to go back. Anyway, I think we'll stick to Tempanyaki, just to try it if nothing else. Also I want to try some sushi. Yeah, I know it's not on the dining plan, but that's OK.

As far as Chef de France goes I have a stupid question. What do snails taste like? I'm a pretty adventurous eater and will try just about anything once. What kind of desserts do they have? I don't see any on the allears site.

I was really looking forward to Spoodles until I read a review a little while ago. I forgot the Diser's name, but she, her sister, and her mom are vegetarians and had a really bad time at Spoodles. I remember she said the waiter's name was Onci (or something like that). He basically ignored them, then charged them for some stuff they didn't even get. Also I thought one of the menus had paella on it. Is that not served anymore and if it is, how is it?

Cape May I'm going for my ex. He loves mussels and I think he might like to try the clams. Being from East Texas we don't get decent seafood here, so probably wouldn't know bad from good. I just want to make sure there's something there I can eat.

Interesting. We've had wonderful experiences at both, many times.

"Try some sushi"? Hmmm... not really the best place to try sushi, to be honest -- not because it isn't good there (it is) but because trying sushi is something best done, I feel, with someone who really likes sushi, and can introduce you to it methodically, telling you what to expect so you're not turned off by the surprise of what you're eating. Anyway, I hope you have a great time!

My original draft of my reply included, "They don't 'taste like snails'. How would you know what snails taste like anyway? " Don't worry about the snails part: With regard to escargots, the snails are just a medium for the butter and garlic. If you do focus on what the snails taste like, I suppose they remind me of conch. (What do conch taste like? Hmmm... mussels, but mussels have a 'muddier' flavor than conch or snails.)

What kind of desserts do they have?

I've read some bad reviews of Spoodles, which mystified me because we've eaten there about a dozen times, and never had a bad experience. We haven't eaten there, though, since Chef Marianne Hummel moved on, so we were getting worried about the few bad reviews. However, I've seen some more recent reviews about how Chef Tony and Sous-chef Dan have pulled the place back together and it is back in prime form. We've got the to go back to Spoodles in February.

As far the Biergarten I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the food, but it just seemed like I was physically in the wrong place three different times. Really though I had a great table, dead center on the lower level right next to the dance floor each time. I still can't remember that silly toast though.

If snails taste like conch I'll be OK. I had some conch curry, when I was down in Belize a few years ago and enjoyed it. I'm afraid it's mussels and clams I've never eaten. My ex loves mussels, but I've just never tried them and neither of us have ever had steamed clams.

We just ate ate Teppanyaki and Spoodles on our trip last week. We don't really have any Japanese style steakhouses near where we live either, so the Teppanyaki experience was unique for us. The food was very good but not spectacular. I'm glad we went, but would probably not go back again as it did not WOW us.

Spoodles was also a good experience. Like one of the other posters stated, try the Portuguese seafood stew if you like seafood. I tried it. It is unique and tasty.

We have eaten at Spoodles every trip .. sometimes as many as 3 or 4 times counting breakfast .. and would not dream of missing it! The 4 cheese flatbread is like heaven on a plate. Try the dessert sampler .. you won't be sorry!

We didn't like Teppanyaki, but then we have at least 6 Japanese Steakhouses within 30 milles of our house .. several that are excellent.

Breakfast at Kona is often our last stop at WDW before leaving. It's quite good!

Cape May Clambake didn't wow us. We went once and haven't been back. If you want really good seafood, try Flying Fish.

The only meal we've had at Chefs was lunch on our last trip in June. It was very good. DD had the creme brullee for dessert. Here's a pic of what I had. I don't remember the name .. ice cream something ..
