Our dead bolt on our main, front door is broken. I am getting a new deadbolt to install there.

We are considering one of the keypad deadbolts - we have one on our door from our garage into our house, but this would be our main, front door. I'm not sure it will look "right" there - our entrance is very nice, a white door with decorative glass and the tall glass windows on either side of the door. Here's a pic of the lock I'm considering. The cost would be around the same for this or a keyed lock, as a keyed lock would have to be rekeyed - all our locks use the same key.

Although it's not traditional...I think it looks nice. And, particularly, from the street view, you wouldn't really notice...

Hmm. I kind of like it. Now you have me thinking of something like that for my front door. Do you pick your own code? I know, dumb question, but I don't know the answer.

It certainly wouldn't *go* with my style of house but really, driving by, who is going to notice? Are there pros and cons of using a keypad lock?

I just bought a new lock for my door. I didn't even think about a touchpad but I like it. My question is how is it powered. If it is powered by battery what happens when the battery dies.

I think it's fine. My husband wants to get one for our front door, too. It looks like your light might be a pewter, though. If so, I'd opt for a pewter lock.

I love your front walkway and the landscaping. It's beautiful!

I think it would look fine, but probably not as stylish as some of the other options. The one thing I noticed though is that it appears your lock is very close to that side window. Please keep in mind for safety that if a burglar can break the window and then just open the lock from the inside, it won't offer any security at all. You might want to consider a double bolted door lock (but for safety and exiting incase of emergency, you always have to keep a key near the door in a place that everyone knows). We have to do this for our front and back door b/c of window placement, so I'm always very cautious about making sure everyone in the house (even guests) knows where the emergency keys are. But to me it's worth it for the added security.

You do pick your own code, you can change it. I need to check on whether I can have a couple of codes - a "permanent one" our family would use and one others would use - pest company, etc.

It is battery operated, but the battery doesn't move the entire deadbolt mechanism - not sure how that works but DH explained it to me. This makes the battery last a really long time. Oh! I think I remembered, you lock/unlock it with the code, then turn the handle thing to actually activate the deadbolt.

LB, thanks for the compliment re landscaping - we did a total makeover of the front of the house recently - went from a T shaped sidewalk to the pavers, levels of landscaping, and a fountain in the center. The porch was ugly, plain wood with inside-type spindles, and we changed it to trex with the metal. Took us awhile, but we love it! The whole thing started as a re-do of the porch, ended up being the sidewalks, landscaping, and replacing the stone from the house with brick. I think that happens to many people!
