Very nice post, Dana. :D

Well said Dana :)

I admire Teresa Heinz Kerry and I consider her a personal role model and an example that a woman can have it all.

Oops, well I nominate Danacara for DIS spokesperson anyway!:sunny:

Danacara: Very well said, as usual. ITA--the ol' double standard at work once again. Or is it just the republicans who will look for any excuse to bash democrats?

I wonder how many people who are putting her down or that keep "shoving" her quote down our throats actually HEARD her speech last night. I'd venture to say not too many. Maybe if you had heard her speak you would have felt differently. I was very moved by what she had to say.

I heard her speak. Let's just say this - you can be a smart, opinionated female without being crabby. (I would have used another word, but this is a family board). ;) How many of us have had female coworkers who fit into the smart, opinionated and successful category, but we couldn't stand them? Come on, you know you've had them.

And smart, opinionated men who are crabby are just as bad.:p ;)

I agree 100%,

intelligent ,opinionated is fine be it male or female,

but the minute you allow another person to make you lose control, you also lose respect..

She was wrong,,,Cheney was wrong...no double standard at all...

Oh puleeeeeze. She told an obnoxious reporter to "shove it". After what I'm sure have been very long, stressful and tiring days, I think I would've had enough too.

And yes, I've had many co-workers who've been successful whom I can't stand--what does that have to do with anything? They, however, were not as philanthropic, educated, worldly and compassionate as she.

Actually, I think women like THK are called *****y and men aren't. For whatever reason, it is OK for men to speak up and not women. Not the way I am rasiing my DD!
I just don't think her comment had anything to do with being crabby. Fed up maybe...but not crabby.

I feel sure Teresa meant "shove it" up your nose. See, if she'd have just finished her sentence, her comment wouldn't be compared to Cheney's.

I'm also clapping for Dana!:)

And I have to ask...what does miaou mean?

So I take it none of you have spoken more harshly than you should to someone because you were stressed or in a bad mood?

Don't you understand? She is held to a higher standard than us mere humans.

Perhaps she could take lessons from Dick Cheney.....

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

He's in a position of power and couldn't control himself. Oh, but he's a man so he doesn't have to be perfect like THK.

.

when was the reporter obnoxious..? she clearly used the term un-american, the reporter simply asked her to explain what she meant

being tired and stressed doesn't justify being rude,,

as the saying goes if you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen....her days are all going to be long and tiring...

that's one of the problems with society today, people justify their behavior by blaming others rather than controlling their behaviour and taking responsibility for themselves..

no matter how tired or stressed,,common courtesy is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength..

if a male were to talk that way to a female reporter he would be branded an Abuser,,

talk about a double standard, if a man were to come home from work and snap at his wife because he had a long tiring stressful day, he would be considered to be verbally abusive, why is it acceptable for a female..

a woman or man can be strong and successful without being rude

God, I'm hoping this isn't directed at my comment. I sometimes struggle getting my thoughts across LOL. I'm on her side...saying there is a double standard. I have a short fuse and can blow quite easily, so the answer to the above question is yes, I have. And no, I don't hold her to a higher standard.

It ticks me off when women say that other women should be less aggressive, less ambitious, less expressively smart than they are by nature. Teresa Heinz Kerry is a bohemian philanthropist intellectual by nature. Laura Bush is a quiet mild librarian by nature, more classically and stereotypically "feminine." Why do we vilify Kerry for not being that way? Why do we fault her for standing up for herself with some pushy reporter? If a man had told him to "shove it," wouldn't we be sitting her thinking, that reporter probably deserved it?

Don't we tell our daughters that they can achieve anything, have it all, live internationally, attract and marry men who are rich in both intellectual and physical assets, raise fantastic kids (have you all seen Chris Heinz?), become philanthropists, and speak with confidence in front of forty million people? So what is it, exactly, that we don't like about Teresa Heinz Kerry?

Women are women's worst enemies. Men never do this to each other. It makes me crazy to see it.

I am late to the pep rally, but want to cheer for this one anyway. Guess what America - I believe John Kerry will win and I don't think Teresa will be stepfordized any time soon, so we'll probably be hearing a lot more from her!!!

So she said shove it, pretty mild in the whole sceme of things....I haven't told anybody that since I was around 12 or 13 and i got mad at my sister. BUT she was done with him..she walked away...in hindsight she should have left it at that...she then approached him and after asking where he was from uttered those "horrible" words. That is where my concern comes in..she couldn't just drop it and she also had to see that there were cameras on her and it would be reported and blown up into a big incident. It sometimes takes more to walk away and ignore the source then to speak up for yourself.

I've been snapped at by my SO and my mother and I wouldn't consider either of them an abuser, they are just the exact opposite, very loving, nurturing people who have a breaking point. I've also snapped at them and I am in no way an abuser. I think that's a stretch to consider a man or a woman snapping at someone an abuser. There's a lot more that goes towards being an abuser than just snapping at someone.

There's another thread around here that will fill you in about the relationship between TKH and the reporter she snapped at. It's started by Disney Doll and it's excellent reading. Maybe then you'll understand why TKH did what she did and said what she said, maybe not.

We are all human. We all have breaking points. We are not subject to being in the limelight and the media's attention so our snappyness isn't broadcasted on the evening news.

I have no double standards when it comes to this sort of thing. I don't care what Cheney, Bush (remember what he called a reporter one day? It's a derogatory term for anus , oh yeah, and I laughed when I heard what he said and I can't stand Bush :p ), THK or Kerry say when they've had enough of something. They're human. We're human. We all have our breaking points and sometimes for people who are in the media's spotlight, it happens in front of the media, it's aimed at the media or reaches the media very quickly. I don't think saying something "bad" tells you a whole lot about the person as a whole. I'll go by the other things I know about Laura Bush and TKH and decide which one I would rather see represent us, not by the "bad" words or "outburst" that someone had towards a reporter. I would be defending Laura Bush if she ever snapped like that too. Never say never! Ya just never know!

Is telling someone to "shove it" really so bad? No. Not if you're the average Joe. But if your husband is running for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, you really need to hold your tongue.

The woman just seems bitter. Like she's in a constant state of defending herself. Why? Lighten up Teresa. I'm not saying a woman shouldn't be strong and self-confident, but why would you want to live your life in such a miserable mood all the time?

And by the way, Cheney was wrong too. If you're the VP, you need to hold your tongue too.;)
