Opinion: Which computer is better--Sony or Dell?

We're a Sony family here. We have 2 Vaio's - one laptop, one desktop. Never had one bit of trouble. We also use a Sony digital camera with it and no problems there as well.

HP.. the customer service has beaten Dell hands down everytime I have used them and I have called both many many times for work.
I just recently bought a new HP laptop for myself. A plastic piece fell off the keyboard, didn't affect function just didn't look right. I called service but apperantly the wrong "division". Whoever took the call put me on hold, told the person in the right division what was going on, made it a conference call. They offered me the option of shipping the computer back OR they would send a keyboard if I was comfortable replacing it..
I had them send the keyboard, TOTAL call time 10 minutes AND they didn't waste my time making me ship the old keyboard back, they said just throw it away.
With Dell that would have take an hour and 6 hoops.

If you are intent on buying a PC, then between the two you mentioned I would say Dell. However, if you are going to do a lot of graphics work, my suggestion would be to look into a Mac.

That was what I was going to say. Easy to use and great quality, go with Apple.
Pixar uses Apples, need I say more. Oh, and so does at least some of Disney.

We have had more trouble with Gateway PCs than anything else. Mine is down, again, for the seventh time in three years - a complete crash, and Gateway could never seem to figure out the problem. And customer support is horrendous.

Our Dell PCs have been servicable. The Dell laptops, OK, though we've had a couple crashes. Customer support has been OK, though a lot is in India, so they're hard to understand.

Our next PC, though, is being built from scratch. I highly recommend it if you can live without customer support! It's more than $1000 cheaper than a comparable Dell or Gateway system with all the bell and whistles. (Don't ask me WHY we need these bells and whistles - our roommmate is a very bad influence.)

Uhhh.....Maybe a few of them, but no way willl they be depending on them.

They use linux renderfarms(on x86 hardware)

and renderman tools aren't usable on the mac platform, only the server is.

Look into who has the best Customer Support and Tech Support. After that it's what's inside the case that's more important than the name on the outside.

If your savvy enough, you can build your own "killer" system for WAY less than what EITHER company wants. I know, I built my own nice system for under $500 and it keeps up with these newest ones (mine's around a year old). To go top o the line on your own, you might push $1,000 - $1,500 whereas for the same thing from either company is around $3,000 - $4,000.

BUT if you don't want to build it, and don't want them to come (hehe), I would suggest whichever one YOU feel more comfortable with! Take them for a run @ your local circuit city or best buy or wherever you have a computer shop nearby, then decide!

oooooOOOOOOoooooo

Yeah, alienware above sony AND dell for sure!

They can get pricey, but they are THE BEST in manufactured PC's!

Dell

And don't forget that Gateway is CLOSING all of their retail stores. While that just may be the market and such, it still sucks that they have to lay off 2500 employees because of it.

I currently have 3 Dell's, my office, a laptop and my home, which just replaced a 3 year old Dell. I have had great service from both the hardware as well as the few times I have needed tech support.

Another vote for Dell, have used them for years with absolutely no problems or service issues.

We're a Dell family! Have a piece of crap HP that has given us nothing but trouble... but I'm typing on my new Dell laptop and love it!

Good luck!

i have to agre with JoNo and chadfromdallas.

while buiding your own (which is A LOT easier than it sounds), is difficult for some,
Alienware, and Falcon Northwest specialize in using the best pc parts for high performance systems.

plus, if you want a killer system in portable format, check out the mobile alienware systems (laptops).
yuo can upgrade the video card in it!

(i dont work for these companies).

while I had a sony laptop also, i have to say you will get more bang for the buck with the above options.
