Opinion on MK day in October

We were given one day base tickets that can not be upgraded. We do not live near WDW but will be in Orlando for a wedding in Oct. We are thinking of using the tickets then. Everyone's favorite park is MK and that is where we would like to use our tickets. Problem is that it is October and there are a lot of parties (we can not afford party tickets). So. Our two choices are to go on a Wed which is a non party day. Overall Moderate crowd level but MK is red. Or go on Thursday which is a party day but a MK is moderate. Since we only have one day I hate to go on a short day, but if the crowds will be unbearable on a non party day we will do the shorter day.

I don't think they will be unbearable on a non party day, so I'd go with Wednesday. Have fun!

How many hours do you expect to spend walking in the park? For various medical reasons my family is good for 5 or 6 hours in full sun (so 8/9am to 3pm) or 8 after dark, (so 4pm to midnight). With that in mind, I'd attend on the best day for those many hours. If you have a way to take a midday break, and increase your time on your feet, then go for the non-party day. Otherwise, if the party day gives you roughly the same hours (9 hours I think) crowds will be lower.

How important are fireworks to you?

Most people are able to do more on a short party day then they are on a longer non-party day. Many people without party tickets avoid the party days with the parks closing at 6, and many people with party tickets use that as their only ticket for the day and don’t go into the parks till 4. So if you’re a ride-oriented group, a party day can be a great way to get everything in with minimal waits!

The downside, however, is that you won’t get to see the fireworks from within the park. Happily Ever After isn’t shown at all on party days. So if fireworks are important to you, that could make the decision.

You also might want to consider buying a Halloween party ticket yourself. They’re a TON of fun, and a personal favorite of mine. There’s a special parade, special fireworks, special shows, short lines for rides, trick-or-treating, and, new to this year, there will be special overlays on a few rides! It’s also the only opportunity for adults to wear a costume in Disney Parks. I went as a jungle cruise skipper last year and got a ton of attention for it-from the jungle cruise cast members and also just random other guests. However, I do realize party tickets can be quite expensive and that might not be within the plan.

Assuming you don’t have an interest in a party ticket, I would go on a party day. I’d make a dinner reservation at a monorail resort restaurant, and then watch the special fireworks from the beach at the Poly (or from the restaurant, depending on where you eat). I once got sticky wings from Kona Cafe to go and ate them on the beach watching the fireworks - I’d totally recommend this as it was fabulous!

If you did end up looking into a party ticket, you could even make it a two day trip! You can get in to magic kingdom at 4 with a party ticket, so plan on being at the gates just about 15 minutes before that. The party goes till midnight. Then, you could use your one day ticket either the day before or after the party. You could either go to a different park and have the party qualify as your magic kingdom day (I’d personally advocate Animal Kingdom as a great mix of rides, shows, and activities), or you could go back to magic kingdom with a no-stress mentality. You’d have done most of the rides with shorter lines, so you could just revisit favorites and stake out a spot to watch happily ever after.

I would LOVE to get party tickets, but we can't afford them right now.

Fireworks are not important to us. Two of my kids don't like FW at all, and we were just in MK in May and did see them then. We have only been to WDW twice EVER so while we don't get to go often, we have seen them.

Then I’d go on the party day. Low crowds means low stress. You also won’t really need to worry about a mid day break as it’ll be a short day anyway! Spend the evening hopping around the monorail resorts or eating a nice dinner to extend the Disney feeling.

Another great thing you can do in the evening (especially if you have any smaller kids with you) would be to head over to the Fort Wilderness campgrounds once the parks close. There are a lot of activities, some of which are free! One fabulous free option is that they do a bonfire and a sing-a-long with Chip and Dale, followed by a movie. You don’t have to be staying on property to attend. They sell s’mores making kits, or you can bring your own for a fraction of the cost.
