Hi all,

I'm planning a surprise trip for my son's 10th birthday in December. To keep things under wraps so he doesn't catch on, I've nicknamed it "Operation Rodent" :-) Although I must say, Mickey is the cutest damn rodent!

We had a trip planned last November but I had to cancel it. I live in Arizona and my air conditioner died in August -- and, of course, around these parts in the summer, AC isn't a luxury but a necessity. We had to cancel the trip to afford the new AC unit -- but luckily my son didn't know about the trip so he didn't know what he was missing. I, on the otherhand, have felt awful about it and am so excited to have the trip rescheduled.

My husband passed away when our son was 4 1/2 and we had been talking about taking him around his 5th birthday. With my husband's death, we didn't go -- and it's taken me this long to be able to do it emotionally as well as financially.

I'm *so* excited to be doing this! The holidays are tough and we'll be going in mid-December -- and I can't wait to see Disneyland's magic during the holidays. I've been 3 times -- when I was 2 years old with my parents, when I was 17 with a friend and her family as a high school graduation present and when I was in my early 20's with some friends. My last trip was in 1992 or 1993 -- a LONG time ago! This will be my son's first trip but I think we'll both be seeing it for the first time.

I'm planning it as a total surprise. We had a trip scheduled to San Diego over Labor Day but when I looked at the costs, realized for a bit more we could do Disney. So, I changed our plane tix to fly into LAX instead. I've got a car service picking us up who will be 'in the loop' as far as the surprise, with no mention of Disney. I run a non-profit and I've told my son we had to cancel our San Diego trip to go to Los Angeles instead so I could meet with people about our non profit. He said "oh, okay, Los Angeles will be fun!" I told him that we were going to be there for work (our non profit) and wouldn't have a bunch of fun, unfortunately, but when it's time don't forget his DS and some books because it'll be kind of boring. OH, and LA isn't so great -- lots of mice running around and such. <hee hee> He won't find out we're going to Disneyland until we pull up to the hotel, across the street :)

I can not wait to see his face!!!!! :wizard:

Oh, how exciting for both of you! I'm sorry to read of the setbacks you've had so far but this time (third time's the charm?) will be awesome! Welcome to the boards..I've been around here just since October, so a relative newbie still. The amount of information I've gotten from here has been incredible!

Edit - I just looked at post count, not date joined. Ooops.

That sounds like such a fun trip! I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I hope this trip will be a very special holiday for you two.

By the way, I absolutely love the code name! Very cool!

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. Your trip sounds fabulous and I'm certain that you and your DS will have the time of your lives! Happy planning (I swear, that's half the fun for me)!:)

Sounds like a fun surprise and I hope you'll be able to make lots and lots of happy memories with DS on this upcoming trip! :wizard:

You rule. Disney is such a big part of my family, and if DW or I died, I can't imagine how hard it would be for the other to plan a Disney trip. My hat is off to you. Great plan, too.

You are a genius! I'm going to start calling my surprise trip "operation rodent" if you don't mind. I hope you have a fantastic trip!

Welcome to the boards!

Over the winter, I planned our own Operation Rodent. My daughter was the unsuspecting child in our case, for her 8th bday. It was a fantastic trip, made all the better by all the times I'd planned parts of it with people while she was with us....

Like visiting the birdcage, where they keep the silver birds. We wanted a silver bird from Southwest when we went to the birdcage.

And I ordered severed rodent auricles (Mickey ears) ahead of time.

And we planned "Great before 9!" for our rejuvenation.

It made me laugh over and over again when she had no clue what we were talking about, and it was a great mind work-out for me trying to come up with how to say what ever we were talking about!

Have fun!

Awww man this story blew me away. You are a great mom! Kudos to you for planning this trip! :cheer2: I am also a relative newbie but these boards are AWESOME I learned soooo much. If you need anything the people on these boards are fantastic, I'm so glad your here :goodvibes
