Just wondering.....how does a family become an "opening family"? :confused3 Has anyone here ever had that privilege? What exactly does the "opening family" do? Probably a goofy question ....but I'm interested. TIA!!! :goodvibes

Show up VERY EARLY before opening and look "wholesome" and INTERESTED. :goodvibes

You MIGHT get chosen.

In general the opening family is picked at random from the guests that are at the turnstiles first. Sometimes they are pre-selected (military families, give kids the world, etc...but 90% of the time it is totally random). Be at the turnstiles early, be happy and upbeat, talk to the CM's that are out there, things like that. They are just really looking for a family that will enjoy the experience (and everyone in the family has to be into it, if you have one person that is not interested or hesitant they will not pick you). At MK the opening family is taken from the turnstiles via the Main Street Fire truck to Toon Town. They board the Steam Train at Toon Town with the characters, they ride the train up to Main Street and once they arrive at Main Street they (along with Mickey) will do a countdown to open the park, throw some pixie dust at the crowd and the park will open for the day. I have not seen the welcome/opening shows at the other parks, but MK's is pretty cool!

There is only one other park with an opening "ceremony".

Its DAK and its a short cute show.
(No family is chosen to participate in this.)
Guests are allowed to enter the turnstyles 10-20 minutes before the posted opening time, the walk all the way past the Oasis and across the bridge to the "main loop sidewalk" facing the Tree of Life, where there are ropes.

A few minutes before the official opening time, Minnie, Goofy and Pluto arrive on the upper deck of a truck, and talk about all the things needed for a happy adventure in the AK.
They even contact (via walkie-talkie) a special "guide" who is stationed near the "Tree of Life".

Then they drive the truck back to the Safari (Africa) area with scores of guests following right behind.

I wonder if they will change the direction of the truck (or add additional "guide" CMs) to walk the crowds back to EE when it is finally open every morning.

We opened MGM in September. I tell people to stand close to the front of the line and have their kids look cute. We got a cute certificate, a picture and a fastpass that we never used, since it wasn't crowded.

The crowd yelled, "Lights, camera, action!" and my son opened and closed a clap board.

I don't regard that as an opening "ceremony" like the formal presentations with audio tracks and several of the characters performing like at MK and DAK, but it is FUN for 60 seconds or so, so "go for it" if you want to.

Our kids: DD9 & DS6, were chosen to "open" Animal Kingdom. We were there early and chatted with the CM (be very happy and bubbly)! They were taken to the office and got to wear "official" AK shirts and they stood in front of everyone and shook the morracas and the music played, then they counted down from 10! It was so fun and they also get cute certificates signed by Mickey to put in their scrapbooks!
The key to any opening is to be EARLY and chat with an official looking CM!!

GOOD LUCK! pixiedust:

we got to open MGM. first family and all. we got there early to see the opening of narnia and we got picked. the CM that picked our family did so cause we all had on matching MVMCP shirts. getting the chance to open the park is a very magical moment. i've only been to a WDW park opening one time before and it was the coolest this we have ever done. i hope these 2 links work. i'm adding link so all can see our family picure at the opening and the magical moments certificate. i just hope they work.

That must have been a thrill for your son, a memory you will have for a life time. :goodvibes

Our family got to open the Magic Kingdom!!! It was wonderful! While you wait for the train to arrive you get to spend probably 20 minutes with the characters alone! It was wonderful! Delores the CM who picked us took our camera & took pics for us! We got a certificate and they gave us a free pic! It was awesome! We were there early and DD was chatting with the CM's and asking how people are chosen, etc... I think it is worth a try! I know no one in my family will ever forget it!!! pixiedust:

Our first trip in 02, my son got to open EPCOT. This was when everyone was heading for TT, as it was the only exciting ride. They pulled him out, he stood on the other side of the ropes, and yelled "EPCOT is now open!"
Then........stand back, as he almost got ran over by the crowd. We got the certificate and purple fast passes for TT. With these, you actually went in the exit, instead of waiting in the FP line.
It made for a great first trip to WDW!

My family opened th MK back in August 2003. It was awesome. We were out at the bus stop at BWV very early and the kids were teasing me because it was dark outside. We pulled up to the MK and they started shrieking and running from the bus because there was no one there at the turnstiles! pixiedust: We didn't ride the train to Toon Town they weren't doing that then. The kids said the magic words (bibbidy, bobbity, boo - they chose them) sprinkled pixie dust, got a photo, a magic wand and each got a magical moment certificate. We all rode down Main St. in the firetruck. I framed the certificates, photos and some pixie dust and gave each of them one for the following Christmas. Now they tease me saying "We don't have to get up that early again do we?"

My kids got to do the magic words & pixie dust once, too. I think being at the gate early is the difference!

We were not able to open MK but had an experience that was almost as good. I have a son (adopted) with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (OK I am going to cry while I type this) he is so wonderful. Steven had some serious issues with speech growing up. He just could not put it together. Winnie the Pooh was our magic. He watched Pooh on TV, slept with a Pooh blanket and played with a Buzz Lightyear Pooh toy. He loves Pooh! The kid is six and shows no signs of stopping the Pooh adoration.

When Steven had to learn a new skill (potty) Pooh did it first. Pooh showed him (through me) how to behave and speak. He talked to Pooh and Pooh was his link to the rest of the world.

We were standing around, interacting wth the characters and waiting for Toon Town to open last October. We got to the front (there was an opening) and the Forest Friends came out. Steven was beside himself. He just was staring in awe and wonder. My oldest knew they were coming but he was so good about standing back and letting Steven have his interaction. I was so proud (normally Gene-Gene is "me, me,me").

Pooh was walking the line and shaking paws and I said, Winnie, this is my son Steven, he is your biggest fan. Steven was smiling so big and Pooh bent down to hug him (you know how they sort of bend at the waist) and Steven was shining like a light. I have never seen him like that.

Pooh moved on a bit and they got ready to drop the rope and then he was back. I thought it was so nice of him to come back to Steven. Then he took Steven's hand in his paw and reached out for Gene-Gene's hand too. I was confused till we all started walking to the place they meet the characters. He held the boys hands and led the way through Toon Town! Pooh held my boys hands tight and they got to meet the characters first. He walked them right back. I was sobbing like a moron. This little boy, my son, he interacted and smiled with Pooh in a way he cannot with people. I was a mess and Steven just shined.

When we got to the tent I pulled Pooh's handler aside and told him what this meant to my son and why and he went up and whispered in his ear and Pooh just hugged and hugged my Steven. It was the highlight of his life and he talks all the time about his friend Pooh. He draws him pictures and writes him letters and it just makes me so happy.

I just had to share.

In the photo Steven is on the left and Gene-Gene the right. I cut myself out cause I was just sobbing like a moron!

this story brought tears to my ees! this is why disney is so wonderful...
Its a place where magic IS REAL, mayb not in the traditional sense of the word but we have ALL experienced the once in a lifetime magic that can only hapen at Disney world!

I am going to be there at dawn!!! I would love to open the park! I mean, my girls would love it!!! pixiedust:

Do they ever pick just adults to open the parks? My DH and I will be by ourselves this upcoming trip (the kids will be traveling with their marching band), and boy, I'd love to open the MK! But we'll have no cute kids with us - has anyone ever seen just adults do this?

KC :teeth:

Once we had an early breakfast at CRT and came out right before they dropped the rope to Fantasyland. We were right at the rope and my DD and another child (boy) were picked to open Fantasyland. She was given a wand to wave and say the magic words. She got a certificate and a front of the line pass for any ride for our whole family. It was really fun.

KCMIller I think they try to go for families with kids usually but you could be an exception! Get there as the sun shines and be nice! I also remember reading, about a year ago, that a family that got there super early asked nicely. It worked for them but that is second hand info. Maybe they will post to this thread. I cannot remember who it was but their post stands out in my mind.
