I know there is a thread for the Olympics, but I wanted to create a thread for the opening ceremonies....

What do you look forward to seeing..

Please post here tonight all the things that you think are amazing...

The thing to beat is Beijing....and I am excited to see the "we are the world" sung...

Also please add your favorite opening ceremony memory (thanks golfgal)

Ahhh I can't wait, I am already giddy with excitement. hehe

I still think the best moment in any Olympic opening ceremony was when the archer lit the torch with bow and arrow. That was AMAZING to watch.

Me too...I told DBf it is going to be a TV and Pizza night....he thinks I am crazy....he just doesn't understand..

going to an Olympic party tonight, very excited....watch the torch come through our city in December......gave me chills to see it.

I saw on the news this morning that they are not even going to try to compete with the Beijing opening ceremonies. I don't think anyone will ever forget how amazing that was! First, these are the Winter Olympics with many fewer countries than in the Summer Olympics. They are looking for a much more initmate experience showcasing Canada and their people. I will not be looking to compare, I'm sure the Olympic spirit will soar as it always does.

We can't wait!
We have our whole night planned with a special menu as well, the highlight being LeCellier's Cheddar Cheese Soup and pretzel bread. And Candaian beer.
:cloud9:

Favorite opening ceremonies memory: Being AT the Atlanta opening ceremonies in 1996 (even though it wasn't the greatest o.c., particularly with the synchronized pickup trucks and the worst Olympic flame ever- the burned McDonald's fries container).

I feel sorry for anyone on the West Coast of the United States as NBC isn't even going to show the Opening Ceremony LIVE.
They are going to show it tape delayed by 1.5 hrs.
Maybe people close to the Canadian border can pick up reception from the Canadian channels and watch it live from there.

"Beating Beijing" is not only NOT the goal of the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee, it also is NOT going to happen. The Chinese had a nearly limitless budget and a chip on their shoulder with something to prove. It WAS a spectacle the likes of which has never been seen and probably won't be seen again for a long time. Simply breathtaking.

BTW, I loved the chrome pickup trucks in Atlanta!

What time does it start? I missed the Beijing openeing ceremony & then NBC had some internet restrictions so I could never catch it online. I'm still peeved at that. I don't want to miss tonight.

We are looking forward to the opening ceremonies tonight. I hadn't realized "We are the World" would be sung. Seems appropriate. I love the opening ceremonies. I just hope I can stay awake for them!

I was just going to ask the same thing. The Olympics site has everything in military time and no mention of east coast/central time like we are used to here :lmao:. I know our local station starts coverage at 6:30 central time so I am guessing 7:00 central time???

NBC said 7:30/8:30 central so I turned it on and saw some qualifying and thought I missed it, but I think it will start at 8pm

It's after 8pm here and it's still not on. :confused3

Okay, can the OP PLEASE update the thread title to reflect when its actually ON? Click Edit, then Advanced, then the box for the thread title shows up.

It is like watching one loooooong Olympic infomercial right now. :headache: :sad2:

It starts at 9 pm EST and is live throughout the country.

It is currently footage from the ski jumping and alpine qualifiers from this morning, and then some montages and interviews. And I'm enjoying the heck out of it!
