Open water is no joke...

I was bitten by a barracuda at CC while sitting in a few inches of water watching DD play. I wore my rings and the diamond must have sparkled and caught it's attention. I didn't even notice it until it bit onto me and I was bleeding. It would not let go. DH had to punch it to get it off me and I had to be treated. Luckily we had already been to CC a few times so it hasn't changed my opinion of CC I am just super cautious now.
Oh wow thats horrible!
I'm glad you haven't let this sully your experience thou!

We held rays in Grand Cayman last April. Swam with them in open water. We'd booked a great excursion with a awesome guy - Captain Mario - Acquarius Sea Tours. Best excursion we've ever booked. We have also snorkeled at Trunk Bay way out past the "little Island" on our own several times and in open water at the caves at Norman Island BVI. Can't wait to do it again ASAP.

At Serenity Bay, I am on the beach, and DW is on a raft about 20 yards out. I start walking out to take her picture and all the little fish around me scatter. I start looking around and see a 2-3 foot Black Tip shark cruising through the water. Picture did not come out due to angle of sun and reflection off the water. My DW is splashing the water with her hands to move the raft, so I tell her to stop because I see a shark. So what does DW do, she jumps off the raft and makes a bigger splash. The shark turns towards her. I have to run and get between her and the shark.

It is originally from 2010 but has pictures of sharks and other sea life taken at CC.

Folks its the ocean.........there is wild life all over. Melissa S is totally correct any thing sparkling will attach a varmint and a bite. This is why fishing lures are made of sparkly materials. Best thing is not to wear jewelry or sparkly bathing suits.

Black tips tend to be timid but there have been reports of a few attacks on people when there is food around.

Agree.

Now what's that in my mind?

It might be a snapper, but I think it looks more like a juvenile Crevalle Jack.
too funny, i only know fish from snorkeling and therefore i wasn't going to weigh in, but when i saw it, i thought Jack too. Except the ones we saw in hawaii near shore were HUGE! If you didn't know what they were, they would scare some people and they were swimming w/in 4 ft of water and DH said that they normally never get that close to shore and that they acted like they were swimming away from something. That week there had been many sightings and even tragically a death from a tiger shark, so I hauled butt out of the water. LOL.

There was a shark attack south of Wailea last week in Maui.

Stingray's are quite common at Serenity Bay, as are barracuda, small sharks, and about a dozen different varieties of star fish. If you go out to where the outer buoys are, they sunk a lot of playthings to create a habitat for the fish, and we've seen a few black sea urchins out there as well (stay well away from those). DW and I were snorkeling out there one day and had a 5-6 ft shark swim right between us :)

You'd see DH and I both dying from heart attacks. :faint:

in 2013 there were a lot of them. the dumps where this attack was is just a short way from where the german girl died from an attack in 2013. i've snorkeled in the "dumps" and "fishbowl" a lot. I don't know the current rainfall there or the situation, but we always listen to the locals. If they aren't snorkeling, you shouldn't be either. The german girl was snorkeling at sunset and in murky water. Very sad situation, but you have to listen to the elements before deciding if it's a good idea or not. 2013 they had a lot of rain and the runoff will bring dead animals and other debris to the ocean therefore attracting predators, also making the water murky. You never snorkel at dusk or dawn. so sad.

eta: it's most likely the same tiger shark, i bet.

my husband would love to see a shark. our tour operator (it was a small tour and the guy was the owner of the company) that found Laverne (the resident tiger shark in the marina off of the BI in hawaii) stopped and was going to let my dh get in the water w/ her to get a photo. DH is just that crazy too. He was about to do it when she swam away. I was sitting on the front of the boat telling everyone to make sure they had their camcorders on b/c i get more money from the insurance if he gets dismembered. HAHAHA! The poor honeymooners on the boat were aghast, but that's the love of being married for so long. LOL.

You got me! I thought that was the best Castaway Cay photo ever! I knew I didn't remember seeing coral heads like that there. It was still good though. Somedays I would rather be swimming with those fishes than being around people. Thanks for the laugh.

Not really. I thought I would add a little humor to this thread.

this (and the volcanic rock in the waters of hawaii where we usually go, will ruin very expensive bathing suits if they are light colored) is why i always have 2 suits per day when on vacation. one for snorkeling and ocean time and the other for my cabana by the pool over looking the ocean LOL. i'm not a big "on the beach" type person. I'd rather be at an awesome serenity pool or adults only pool over looking the beach and water than in it. Plus most of my suits have lots of bling on them and after an obvious encounter with a barracuda who took an interest to one of my suits and my wedding ring, i now choose to leave all jewelry and expensive suits in the room when we go into the ocean LOL.
Last time we were there a few years ago, we took a nice day long snorkel trip to Lanai and had a great time. Lots of great spots and no other boats around fighting for reef time. I little deeper water than many people like I think.

We are headed back at the end of October this year and are doing 4 days in Honolulu before we fly over to Maui but am so looking forward to it. I always say, if we could get work over there............we would just move there.

awww that's awesome! we've swam with some amazing creatures in hawaii. spotted eagle rays, octopus, dolphin, honu, jack, barracuda (i hate them lol), eels, manta rays and even got within 6 ft of water w/ the marina's resident tiger shark named Laverne. lol

never seen anything but fish and barracuda in the caribbean though

I once did a discover scuba excursion in St. Thomas. The instructor gave us a specific hand signal (don't remember what it was), but he said if he gives that signal, just stop and breathe normally because that means they just saw a shark. Not to panic or try to swim away. Just stop and breathe. We all laughed (because we thought he was kidding), but sure enough, we got the signal. I looked up and a roughly 6-foot reef shark has swam into the bay circled around and headed right back out where he came from. The whole shark encounter lasted 10-15 seconds, but it was really cool. The shark paid no attention to us, just came in and checked out the place and left.

Let me know if anyone see this guy in CC. Otherwise most of the other sea life in around CC isn't a problem. Most wont give you a 2nd look.
