DH and I were swimming at Serenity Bay. I thought the "Swim at your own risks..." was just blah blah until I saw this:

That one was at about 6-7 feets from me. It was swimming around us for about a minute. (I nearly peed in my pants).

Anybody knows what kind of fish is over the stingray?

awww that's awesome! we've swam with some amazing creatures in hawaii. spotted eagle rays, octopus, dolphin, honu, jack, barracuda (i hate them lol), eels, manta rays and even got within 6 ft of water w/ the marina's resident tiger shark named Laverne. lol

never seen anything but fish and barracuda in the caribbean though

We've seen them at Serenity Bay before. We frequent Cozumel and see them all the time. Just remember the stingray shuffle and you'll be fine. We've also swam in the open with barracudas. Never an issue. Just don't wear bling. They don't want you. They want the fish that surround them.

Not sure what you mean.
They are generally not aggressive. If you leave them alone, they should leave you alone.

I saw a documentary about stingrays who got scared and attacked people and hurt them really bad (...or Steve Irwin).

We did not move. We gave it space. He/She went away. :)

The "stingray shuffle"?

We were standing up. It was close from the beach.

Let's see if I can explain it, LOL. Just drag your feet in the sand as you walk around so they will know to move on. You don't want to step on them.

Looks like a yellow tail snapper or a snapper. Hard to tell from that pic, but I have seen the snappers around the lagoons.

I could not see it at the moment of the picture... It really looks blue/grey.

We totally swam with our rings on. So stupid.

You know it is the ocean at CC and Serenity Bay?
Right?
Not a pool?
Why just just blah blah?

We have choices as adults. You can live land locked forever because of fear or realize the reality of anything happening is minimal. For that matter don't leave you're house or drive because statistically speaking you have a greater chance of dying by car than by shark or sting ray. Life is about calculated risks. I hope people don't scare you off of having a good time over something that most likely will never happen. Or course you can always stay home and shelter yourself, but what a wonderful world you might miss. IMHO enjoy the moment and event, you may never have that opportunity again. Whatever direction you choose, I hope it's the best for you and wish you well.

They were be interacted with. Like I said, you leave them alone--they should leave you alone. You did the right thing, although I think you could move around.

Look, it was my first time at the beach/swimming in the ocean. I grew up (and still live in Canada). The worst we get in our lakes are leeches!

We thought those things were in the ocean, yes, but more like miles away, not 50 feet from the beach. I honestly thought nothing would happen. We were surprised to see a (real) starfish!

this (and the volcanic rock in the waters of hawaii where we usually go, will ruin very expensive bathing suits if they are light colored) is why i always have 2 suits per day when on vacation. one for snorkeling and ocean time and the other for my cabana by the pool over looking the ocean LOL. i'm not a big "on the beach" type person. I'd rather be at an awesome serenity pool or adults only pool over looking the beach and water than in it. Plus most of my suits have lots of bling on them and after an obvious encounter with a barracuda who took an interest to one of my suits and my wedding ring, i now choose to leave all jewelry and expensive suits in the room when we go into the ocean LOL.

I don't understand why you are telling me that. :confused3
