OPA-LOCKA, Fla. - Two robbery suspects trying escape police ran into a Catholic school Thursday, forcing about 80 children to flee the school.
Both suspects were arrested and no children were hurt, Hialeah police spokesman Frank Gonzalez said. He said the suspects crashed their truck into a house as they fled police and then ran inside Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He didn't know if the arrests happened inside or outside the school.
WFOR-TV in Miami showed footage of small children running from the school. A woman rushed out of the school carrying two children, followed by another woman who quickly walked two youngsters out.
A group of older children were later seen running from the school across a parking lot into another building.
Iris Santos, a secretary at the church, told WFOR that police told her that a person with a gun was in the preschool.
"I see a lot of policemen. They are surrounding the property. They have guns. They say to lock the door and stay inside," she said before the last suspect was captured.
Opa-locka is a Miami suburb.
