Oooh! Drug Bust on the Magic!

4Nana...remember, there are MANY CM with no guest contact. The kitchen staff, the engine crew, the ship mantaince staff, laundry staff, ect.
I think I will make a point of asking around to see what I can learn when I am on board (in 11 days!!!). I would think the hard working honest CMs would be upset that someone would tarnish their reputation.

HMmmmmmmmm .... Well maybe now DCL will lower their rates seeing the extremes passengers will go through to pay for their cruise! LOL :D

Please help--I click on the site listed in the first post and do not get any info about the drug bust. What am I doing wrong?

I just tried the link and it worked but couldn't find the story. Thought it might already have been archived since evening news cycle has already been completed but couldn't find it there either!

Thanks, I feel better. I could not figure out how to check archives beyond a list they had of things from weeks past. There did not seem to be a SEARCH option. If anyone saved it with its own address, please post it here.

I'm guessing this isn't one of the covered reasons in the cruise insurance brochure.....Your money will be cheerfully refunded if you are arrested for dealing drugs while on your vacation.

Seriously, I think the post about getting the pickup from someone on board and taking it someone else off the ship makes perfect sense. Perhaps CM's things are checked if they leave the ship with backpacks?? Why else would someone book the cruise to travel down the FL coast. It doesn't make sense that someone would carry the stuff onto the ship, only to take it off the next day. Maybe another CM was the informant. Maybe a guest the week before had hid the stuff on the ship and the one arrested was to retreive the package and get it off at Key West....that way the package could have been put on at one of the ports by a guest, hidden and then taken off in KW without ever having anyone take it through customs at Port C. I hope someone who gets the local FL newspapers will keep us informed!

the DIS detectives...we're just a regular bunch of nancy drews and hardy boys, aren't we? LoL

It would make sense that a CM might have planted it, but at the same time, it also makes sense that customs "overlooked" this character just to be sure and nab him at the next port. and I also agree that it was foolish of him to sail from US port to US port..why not just drive?

I'm kind of worried about them going ahead and letting him ride to Key West if that's the case. He may have figured things out. gotten desperate, and someone may have gotten hurt in the process. We all know that even if he didn't board with a weapon, he could easily get a knife, etc. on board.

As much as I hate to think so, I think it must have involved a CM. If the passenger had tried to take the stuff through the carry-on check, the drug-sniffing dog would have made a fuss in front of everyone. If he checked it in his luggage, he must have known that they also use a drug-sniffing dog for that. I know drug dealers can be really stupid, but THAT stupid? The only way for the drugs to NOT be detected would have been for a CM to bring them on. And yes, I am sure they check the CM's, but probably not as thoroughly as they check what passengers are bringing aboard. Right? That would also explain why the guy had to get on the ship. Very strange.

ok..
first of all the dogs at port canaveral are bomb-sniffing dogs, not drug-sniffing dogs (they used to be drug sniffers but since 9-11, bombs are considered the greater threat)...a dog cannot be trained to do both....he can only do one or the other...the cuties at the port are looking for bombs.....

second - it is not that illogical for the drug carrier to be on that itinerary.....perhaps he was planning on selling the cocaine in key west and then carrying the money for deposit in the grand caymans, one of the great offshore banking locations (and no questions asked)......although this would assume the banks are open on saturdays when the magic is at the grand caymans....i doubt he would bank it in cozumel......grand caymans is the place....

It makes sense that the money would go on to Grand Caymans. And I THINK Magic is there Wed...

Leave Sat,
KW Sun
Sea Mon (formal night)
Cozumel Tue
Grand Caymans Wed
Sea Thur (semi-formal night)
CC Fri
Home Sat

It is also quite possible that DEA or another law enforcement agency had this guy under surveillance and followed him on board (crew quarters, crew clothing maybe)

These are the thoughts the detectives at my dinner table came up with last night. If nothing else it has been great for conversation!:)

oh..you're right....it's another cruise line that hits the grand caymans on a saturday.....

anyway........
as someone already said, you should never assume everyone on board is as squeaky clean as you are......

as for it being a CM....i have my doubts...DCL does very serious background checks on them.....
it's much easier for a passenger to just buy a ticket and get on board.....i'm much less worried about drug dealers than i am about terrorists.....one of the things we called DCL about since we cruised on the july 4th cruise.....

Well, if DCL no longer checks passengers' luggage for drugs, I guess there is probably a whole lot of drug smuggling going on there!

The Magic stops at Grand Cayman on Tuesday (yesterday) and Cozumel on Wednesday.

On our Sept.7-14th Magic cruise there were NO dogs when we went through the checkin at the terminal to check carry on bags. They did have bomb-sniffing dogs checking the "checked" baggage before it was loaded onto the ship. When we departed at Port Canaveral, there were drug-sniffing dogs that went through the baggage claim area before anyone was let off the ship and you had to go past them again when you left the terminal. The concern is obviously more with taking drugs off the ship than bringing them on.

Thanks for the link to the article.

What if one guest picked up the drugs in St. Thomas or St. Martin and hid them on the MAGIC on one cruise and the next week another guest picked up the stash and took them off in Key West? If he sold it all in Key West on Sunday, he could have reboarded and deposited the money in a bank in Grand Cayman on Tuesday.

I'm starting my day reading new posts that linked into my email - and as I read the newest on this thread the thought "movie of the week" entered my head. You know one of those interactive kinds where there are multiple endings based on the input from the viewers? Or the DISers could all get together and let our imaginations run wild....

Thanks all! I'm barely into my second cup of tea and sitting here with an ear to ear grin thinking about all of the possibilties!
