we are staying 14 nites at disney in september,

considering splitting and doing 4 nites(8-12th) at royal pacific at universal to get front of line access.

question is we have free dining at disney but have to drive to universal and no front of line,

Is front of line that useful at this time?

Probably not necessary. I would suggest arriving at the parks early because even at slow times, the lines can get long on the most popular rides.

September has very light crowds.
The advantage to staying onsite at Universal would be the pools, short walk to the parks, and "feeling" like you are part of the action. When people drive up from Disney, visit the park, then drive back to Disney, they don't think much of it. Why? Because they didn't get the full effect. If you change your mind and decide to stay at Universal, do it at the end of your trip. Once you go to Universal, you'll be spoiled. And once the kids are over the age of 8, they enjoy the thrill rides at IOA more than the family rides at Disney.
