Onshore excursions

our family is going on the 3-night cruise in september. my husband wants to take our 8-yr old on a snorkeling adventure. one is offered in nassau and another in castaway cay. can anyone comment on both/either one?

is it possible to tour atlantis on our own or would going on the disney-arranged tour be better? what is the cost difference? what else to do after the "discovery atlantis" tour? any suggestions?

Castaway Cay is not as desirable snorkling (IMHO) because there are so many people in one area and the sand gets stirred up. I'd try Nassau.
