I contend that because of the 50 year contract at SSR, there is only one best choice for anyone who is less than 35 or 40 years old!

I own 500 points at OKW and VB. I am 58 years old. When I bought in 1992, I was 47, and 2042 seemed to be plenty far enough into the future that it did not seem much different from buying outright. I will get to use it until I die and will be able to pass it on.

However, if I were 47 now, I would definitely and only buy SSR! I would not want to be able to imagine a time when I could no longer use DVC!

I guess it just depends on what you like. We're under 40, and SSR holds absolutely no appeal to us...

We are 33 and 35 and the 50 years was a big deal for us. Even if we will be too old to use it our kids are five now and we wanted it to last long enough for them to take their kids.

When we bought in, I was 25 and DH was 29. We bought at the boardwalk. If I were buying now, I would buy a BW resale over SSR, we just love the boardwalk THAT MUCH. The ONLY choice if you are under 40 is to buy in where you want to stay so that you are virtually guaranteed (with a little planning) many years of vacations at your favorite resort. Hey, that works if you are over 40 too :)

I agree that the 50 year deal at SSR is a big consideration for the younger (under 40 :) ) DVC potential buyer. It would have made us think twice, but in the long run I still think the "buy where you want to stay the most" advice is sound.

I look at the "view" mess at BWV and am glad to have first shot at the standard rooms at 11 months. And I think about VWL at Christmas and know I'll be glad to have the 11 month advantage there at some point in the future.

I think SSR will be a great resort, but when it was announced there were a lot of threads here trying to figure out how the demand for the resort would be. Some thought they'd build another SAB type pool. Some thought they'd throw in some other perks. As it turned out, the marketing hook they chose was to give a 50 year contract...making the resort even more appealing.

I am in the age range described by the OP, and I wouldn't trade my VWL or BWV contracts for SSR on an even swap. But if I were 25 or 30, I'd have to give it some hard consideration.

It was the final push for my husband and myself (25 & 26). I had wanted DVC for quite some time but the timing wasn't right. When SSR was announced to have the 50 year contract, we decided the timing was finally right. I do love the boardwalk area and I like the quiet of OKW. But we are flexible and will eventually get to try everything. SSR isn't the only choice for people under 40 but it defintely is a strong choice.

Happy Holiday!

I am a little over 40 ;) but if I was buying now, I would still buy BWV. That is where I want to stay most, we love the location near Epcot & MGM. We stay there in early Dec, which is hard to get at 7 months. We also like OKW because of the bigger rooms and you can park right outside. SSR does not have any of these plusses, I doubt I will stay there. The increased time would be when I'm 82 to 94, not a big concern now. I agree it's a consideration for the younger buyer but not the only one.

Regardless of the buyer's age, SSR is the only option through the main avenue of DVC distribution (DVD). Most new buyers to DVC aren't aware of the resale, limited albeit, market. Just like a 1992 Corvette, if you want one you can likely find it available on secondary supply lines, but you won't walk into a local Chevy dealer and drive a new one off the lot.

We purchased DVC @ BCV over Memorial Day Weekend. At the time, we could choose a contract at either BCV or VWL (our guide told us that some points would be opening @ BWV due to the sales office closing). We knew that we could wait for SSR to go on sale (would have been about a month, I think). At the time, we did not know the hook (50 year contract). After finding out the hook, we felt a little misdirected. We are 34 & 32 (will be 73 & 71 when 2042 rolls around). Granted we hope to be enjoying our retirement in WDW, so the additional 12 years sounded GREAT!

But....

The more that we thought about it.. Our ds is 21 months old. He is going to love SAB. We LOVE Epcot. The greatest selling point for us, was the ability to walk to World Showcase for dinner ANY NIGHT we chose. We knew that we wanted to buy, where we wanted to stay. Knowing that we like to travel during December, the 11 month window at BCV (a smaller resort) was the #1 factor.

So, in conclusion, I would have to respectfully disagree with the OP, SSR is Not The Only One Best Choice for buyers under the age of 35 or 40. It comes down to many other factors besides length of contract, IMHO.

We will eventually buy an additional contract at SSR (like 30 years from nwo), but not before we add additional points at BCV and buy a small resale @ VWL.

I'm under 40 (by at least a year!). I wouldn't have bought SSR for the 50 year contract. We will be in our mid 70s when our BWV contract expires - and we bought our contract primarily to take the kids to Disney for the next ten or fifteen years - after which I'm not quite sure what we will do. We enjoy golf, and we enjoy Disney, but we don't enjoy Disney enough to spend a week there every year in our retirement, and there are less expensive and nicer places to play golf. We do hope to still use it on occation - for both parks and golf, (and I'm sure I'll be able to give away points, if my kids don't want to use them, my relatives with younger children will) but its purpose will be fullfilled for us in about twelve years. And once the kids are away, BW is the perfect location for us - the park we enjoy most is Epcot.

Besides, you are making the assuming that Disney won't make contract extention a revenue generator in twenty or thirty years.
