I am interested in becoming a travel agent. Due to my disabilities, I am retired from my current profession as a teacher, and because of my love of travel, I am thinking this could be an ideal second career.

I have googled online training for becoming a travel agent. The choices are too numerous.

I was just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of which programs are legitimate, good, effective, etc.

I am retired law enforcement and had to reinvent myself also. I checked into online schools because of my on duty disabling injuries. In the end I applied my community college credits to a 4 year college. Many courses I could take online, with the rest of the class. There were live interactions, like an informal classroom to interact.

I would check your area for a Community college, ours has a great course for travel agents, real estate lic. etc. The Office of vocational Rehabilitation assisted with a lap top computer, software for dictation, and every semester I had the course payments made.

I am on SSDI but continue to work with my Ticket to Work program for assistance.

There are so many online choices out there, costly and I questioned what book only would prepare me for a new career where I did not have a live instructor. Online is great for extending accreditation in a set career, but from scratch and we would have so many questions spontaneously, I would rather a tech school or community college setting. The cost is substantially less too.

Thank you so much for the wonderfully detailed response. I am most appreciative and will contact our local community college.

Since there are no travel agents within an hour or so from where we live, I have been looking into becoming a travel agent. I am somewhat confused on what is required. Is there a certification needed? What classes are needed? Is all that is required is to sign up with a company and get started?
