I'm wondering how long it takes between when you order the cash and when it available for picking up? Who's done this before, and is there anything else I should know about it?

Bank or post office?

If it is the PO, then the time/days they list there is correct.

Oh I was talking about the Travellex one - didn't know you could do it online through the bank or PO! Will have to look into that.

Check the exchange rate. I believe we had quite an involved thread last year on the Dis about the exchange rates, most are close to each other. The thing about the PO is that they don't charge a transaction fee.

I was buying from a bank in the city because there was a friendly teller there and he waived the fee for me. He got another position and when the new teller started to charge me the fee, I checked the PO. Worked out cheaper.

Hmmm looks like Travelex has a slightly higher exchange rate than PO, and they don't charge commission either. I get FF points if I use them too :thumbsup2 Am I missing something?

Nope. If they have the higher exchange rate with no fees, go for it.

What card gives you points??

No card, just Travelex themselves that are associated with Qantas. I assume you just put your FF number in somewhere. You can earn up to 1 point per dollar if you exchange over $1000 :thumbsup2

Hi,

We have done this a few times, it was very convenient and the rates were OK and better than elsewhere. I did it a few days before we left, but the website should tell you what the minimum time before departure is. The only trick was that (here in Brisbane) the collection point was in the departure lounge area. When we went to the office in the check-in hall they looked at us all confused.

These days we mostly use out Citibank Plus card and withdraw local currency once we arrive (market rates with no transaction or exchange fees) and use the 28Degrees Mastercard for purchases.

Have a ton of fun

I looked into this a bit further this afternoon and thought I'd share some information that might be useful for others.

Travelex don't charge a commission fee for online exchanges UNLESS you're going through Qantas to earn points. So... you can either have no commission OR points, not both :sad2: I decided that I'm willing to pay an extra $10 for 1000 points :rotfl:

We were also going to pay the CC surcharge to get even more points, but I noticed a little note on the screen about cash advances. Apparently Travelex don't count the transaction as a cash advance, but they warned that financial institutions may do. So I called ANZ to find out their stance, and found out that the CC was a no go - definitely NOT willing to pay cash advance fees for points...

So looks like I'll be BPAYing it. With BPAY, you need to allow at least 3 business days before you can pick up your cash from an airport location, or at least 5 business days before you can pick it up from a suburban location. I figure if I complete my order by the end of the week I should be fine.

Congrats!
