We have 2 rooms booked for 2 aults and 4 kids. We are hoping for connecting rooms and that request is on our reservations. Would doing online check in help this? hinder this? not really matter?

Online check-in and requests have nothing to do with each other.

Online check-in allows you to put a time of arrival and place a credit card on file, which means your package is ready; maybe your room is ready, maybe not.

Having your requests granted has to do with maintenance issues, how busy the resort is, if other resorts are overbooked, etc.

Call CRO and make sure they assign a "travel with" number to link both reservations together. This will help your odds of getting connecting rooms.
