Online Check-In: A Guide

You really don't need anything but your ID. They can reprint everything and you can sign everything right there at the terminal.

Good point. The website (I think) says you need to print it, but of course it does make sense they'd be able to print it for you as well. I'll change the instructions to say it's recommended but that people shouldn't stress if they forget. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I've booked Palo brunch and dinner BEFORE going through to select my PAT.

Also once you've cruised, a lot of the stuff in the info section is pre-filled for you I believe.

Thanks! What do you think is more critical (in terms of priority, or what fills-up first)? I was hoping to have the Steps in order of importance, though I guess some of these decisions are based on individual preferences...

You can eliminate steps 1 & 2 - those two items can be done anytime after you book your cruise. No need to wait until you online checkin. I would move step 5 to step 1 if you want a chance at scoring a cabana. (Cabanas are under Port Adventures.) Then do PAT. Adult dining options can move down the list unless you want a brunch on one of the shorter cruises.

My list would be:
  1. Cabana
  2. PAT
  3. Adult Dining
  4. Port Adventures
  5. Spa
Martin

Thanks! I'm realizing that some of these things w/ the order come down to personal priorities but it's good to know about the Cabanas. Our first cruise was the Pacific Coast so that wasn't an option for us. I'll change the order to match these recommendations and note that 3 and 4 are interchangeable, depending on what you mentioned.

Ok so for #1s and 2, I thought you couldn't do that until the official Online Check-In time? I'm going to try and log in now and see what happens, I may have misunderstood. Also, even if there's info entered there, I thought the system forced you to go through those screens? It'd be great if they could be done ahead of time or skipped till later...

For me, I would rather book Palo dinner and brunch first (especially if on a short cruise) as well as any excursions I'm interested in that I feel like are popular (made easier if you've marked them as favorites), THEN worry about PAT because even on a sold-out Presidents' Week cruise I got the first PAT as a Silver CC member. But if I get 10:45 or 11, it's not a big deal.

You can most definitely input your passport numbers before your check-in date. If you didn't input the passport info when you booked it, in the first place, you can do it by clicking to "modify" your reservation and then updating the "Guest Information."

PS: For anyone who doesn't know how to find the Modify button, do this: Go online; log in; go to the "Planning Center" by "retrieving your reservation" (you need your reservation number); then, click on the box that says "reservation summary" — and, in the popup, hit "modify." You can input all your passport numbers, as I say, under "Guest Information."

I've totally done this already, and my check-in date isn't until June 17.

Did you use a TA? I have never been able to go into "modify", presumably because we do go through a TA. I don't need to go into it, but thought others might be in this situation.

Thanks for the details. The system won't let me modify anything at this point- maybe that's b/c I'm already PIF? There's a message that says I can't modify anything w/out calling DCL or my Travel Agent. I know they already have my Passport info, though, so does that mean that screen will have it already filled-in when I login for my Cruise Check-In? Probably so- I think someone above mentioned that some stuff is filled in for repeat cruisers.

Awesome, thanks! From what I'm reading here, there seems to be a few spots where it comes down to individual preference. I'll make a note that this is one of those places. See, this is why I love this board- thanks to everyone for the ideas. New draft coming shortly...

*** NEW DRAFT *** Changes/suggestions/answers to QUESTIONS IN CAPS RED are welcome! Thanks, everyone, for your help. The power of the internet- I love it! :-)

What is Online Check-In? An efficient way to get as much of the logistics done ahead of your actual cruise date.

Why should I do it right away? Saves times at the port. But also, this is how you get your Port Arrival Time (PAT), book special dining (like Remy or Palo), and book excursions. The sooner you book, the better chance you have of getting what you want.

How soon can I do it? You are assigned a date based on your "level" (i.e., first time cruiser, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level- membership in those groups are also known as the "Castaway Club", for which you are automatically enrolled after your first cruise). NOTE: In addition to waiting for your assigned date, your cruise has to be Paid in Full (PIF).

What time do I do it? If your check-in says March 3rd, that means you can check-in as of 12:01AM (Eastern Time) on March 3rd. For all practical purposes, this means you can stay up till Midnight (Eastern Time) on March 2nd, and be ready as soon as the clock switches to 12:01AM (cause that point the date has now changed to March 3rd). NOTE: It doesn't work to login early and refresh- you have to wait till 12:01AM to login. ALSO NOTE: Remember, we're talking Eastern Time here, for those of you outside the United States, that's GMT - 4:00.

What order should I book things? Do them in the order listed below... #'s 1-6 should be done ASAP. The rest can wait.

Where do I do this? Login to your reservation. Under "Planning Center", you'll see a bunch of options. Choose "My Online Check-In". QUESTION: DOES ALL THIS (BELOW) TAKE PLACE UNDER THE "MY ONLINE CHECK-IN" TAB? I'M CONFUSED B/C THERE ARE TABS THAT SEEM SIMILAR FROM THIS PAGE, SUCH AS "MY CRUISE ACTIVITIES" AND "AIR AND GROUND TRANSPORTATION"... DO I HAVE THINGS LABELED INCORRECTLY BELOW? I'M A VERY LINEAR THINKER AND LIKE VERY SPECIFIC DETAILS- IF ANYONE HAS LIKE A FLOW CHART FOR HOW THESE MENUS WORK, THAT'D BE AWESOME. :-)

Ok, I'm logged in and ready to do this- now, what?

(1) Go to the section for "Guest Information" and then to "Identification". To save time (even if you have the info handy), select "Photo ID/Use Birth Certificate" (instead of Passport). QUESTION: DO I NEED EXPIRATION OR OTHER INFO FROM THE PHOTO IDS? Skip over the flight details for now, too. Your goal is to move quickly from this page- you can come back later to enter everything. Also in "Guest Information", go to "Pre/Post Cruise" and just enter anything. It doesn't matter what, come back later to enter it all correctly. The goal is to move on quickly. NOTE: Some of this info may already be filled-in for you and/or you may have already input/modified this info already.

(2) If you're hoping to get a Cabana at Castaway Cay, go to "Port Adventures" and get that right away. You can then book Excursions in this section IF you're very worried about something filling up and you will be heartbroken if you don't get it. If that's not as critical for you, move down to #s 3 and 4, and then come back here to "Port Adventures" when you're done w/ those. These decisions just depend on what your highest priorities are.

(3) If you're planning on Brunch at Palo or Remy *or* dinner at either of those places on a cruise that's shorter than 7 days, and getting your first choice is very important to you, then book this now in "Adult Dining". If you're not doing brunch, are on a longer (more than 4 day) cruise, are more flexible about getting the date/time you want, or just willing to take a chance, you can skip down to #4 and then come back to this after that. If you try to book and nothing is available, don't worry- they hold some back for booking onboard. As soon as you get onboard, check the Navigator or ask someone where to go to book it.) TIP: Research previous but recent Navigators to decide which day to schedule dining, remembering that your assigned dining rotation (which you won't know till you board) could also make a difference in your decision.

(4) Now move to "Port Arrival Time" (PAT) and select a time. The most common advice is to choose the earliest time possible to maximize your time onboard. (Remember, however, that getting onboard sooner doesn't get you into your room or get you your luggage any sooner.) If you know you won't be able to get there at the earliest time (due to your flight arrival, etc.), however, please pick a time that's more realistic based on your estimated port arrival (no point in picking a time that earlier than you could possibly arrive and that just takes away from others who could've gotten/used that time).

(5) If you didn't already book Excursions in #2 above, do it now by going back to "Port Adventures". There may or may not be a rush to book these, it just depends on what's popular and how close it is to sailing date. You can book now and cancel later, and there's no charge until you actually do the excursion. QUESTION: IS THIS TRUE?? TIP: Do your research ahead of time to figure out what you want to do and whether you want to do it through Disney or not.

*** The items above should be done immediately. The items below can be done at a later time and in any order. ***

(6) Next go to "Spa and Fitness". This is where you can get a Rainforest Pass, etc. QUESTION: WHAT ELSE CAN BE SAID HERE?

(7) Now go to the "Nursery" and book this if you already know when you want it arranged. Or you can do this onboard. QUESTION: WHAT ELSE CAN BE SAID HERE?

(8) Go to your "Onboard Account", ... QUESTION: WHAT ELSE CAN BE SAID HERE?

(9) In "On Board Fun", you can pre-register for the Kids' Clubs. If you don't do this online, you can still do it in person the first time you take your kids to the Clubs. Doing it online, however, saves you a few minutes later on. Whether you pre-register online or just register in person, you get the wristbands in person EITHER at the Kids' Club desk in the terminal OR at the actual clubs themselves. HINT: If you're at the port early and bored, go ahead and get wristbands in the terminal. If there's no time, don't bother, just get on the ship later (either the first time you go to the Clubs OR soon after you're on the ship).

(10) Don't forget to go to "Review Contract". Be sure to read this, but you DON'T need to print anything. QUESTION: IS THIS TRUE? Also, print the "Signature Form", then sign and bring it to the Port. If you forget to bring it though, don't stress- they can reprint it for you :-)

Thanks! Is the "Use my Birth Certificate" option the same as the "Photo ID" option I wrote in "Step 1" above? Or are those two different options?

it's in step 1. i went in and took a screenshot for you (thought it said "Use my Birth Certificate" but apparently it does not!):

basically you toggle between "Photo & Government ID" vs. "Passport". if you select the former, you can quickly move on to the next passenger's section w/o filling anything else, but if you select "Passport", then additional fields will pop up and you have to enter your passport number, expiration date, etc. then you click save, then go to the next guest.

You cannot book the Rainforest Room pass online, even during online check in. You can pre-purchase the day passes anytime after booking your cruise by calling DCL or faxing in an order form. The information on ordering these is found under the "In Room Gifts & Shopping" link on the DCL website. If you want a length of cruise pass, those must be purchased on board.

Under spa and fitness, you can book various spa and salon appointments.

Thanks for this tip. I was able to go in and update DH's passport info as his expired since our last cruise! I was worried about the delay this would cause when online check in became available.

Awesome, thanks! I will make those changes in the next draft. I realized there are a few other things you can order ahead of time, too, like a photo package and wine package, and that those things (and now I've learned, the Rainforest Pass, as well) are totally different from the Online Check-In. I think I'll add a little addendum to the Check-In Guide that mentions there are other things that can be pre-ordered elsewhere but it's separate from the Online Check-In stuff. Is it correct that "In Room Gifts and Shopping" can only be done ahead of time AFTER you have PIF? Thanks!

Just wondering- did you use a TA? I'm starting to think that people who use a TA aren't able to click 'modify' and make the changes that others are describing...? Or maybe there is some other reason, but I know that I and at least one other person who posted here (and we both used TAs) aren't able to modify anything... Thanks!

Under modify on my reservation it says I need to call my Travel agent to modify.

Exactlly, Micandminforeve! I rarely use a TA, but this was a special trip so I cannot do any modifying, plus it is a GTY so I'm just praying that all will go well when I try to do my online checkin in a couple of weeks. I'm accustomed to doing everything myself. But I got a great price, so I'm not complaining'! :yay:

I don't believe so. I have never tried to order prior to PIF, just because there was no need to order it that far ahead. So I can't say definitively, but I am pretty sure you don't need to be PIF to order.
